Elaine, if Todd ends up getting to take home a Harley to test I'll second your comment, lol.
This might be a good thing to take to one of the VO-BB get together's everyone's been discussing. I'm game for a NYC outing if someone wants to sponsor a place to hang a mic. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Hi guys,
I have this mic mount and love it. It really reduced the low frequency rumble in my tracks. _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

1:08am PST....
About 10 hours ago, I picked up my evaluation copy of the M600. By the end of the weekend, I hope to have a few comments about it for anyone who cares to visit again.

For those still interested.... I've finished my evaluation of the M600.
This is one handsome and finely-tooled piece of equipment. Anyone would want to have it in their audio chain.
Obviously someone has taken great pains to design and manufacture this thing (Yeah! Enhanced Audio in Ireland).
As to whether it actually improves the signal into your DAW is something I'm going to leave to the audiophiles. Personally, I couldn't tell the difference to my ear.
This is not the full write-up. I give it considerably more time on my blog, and because I'm a slacker, I'm going to refer you there for the full monty.
Hope you don't mind.... there's charts, more pictures, lots of links, and a final conclusion.
(hint: I don't want to give it back)

Looks like that thing could double as a furniture clamp or a Christmas tree stand...
Nice write-up Dave. Thanks for the link. |

Cool, thanks for that Dave...it does look pretty spiffy for sure. And those positioning levers are a good idea. _________________ Lou Zucaro

Hey Dave, maybe you could put some of your recordings on the blog for the rest of us to hear... let folks check it out for themselves
BTW: there's also some good talk on gearslutz relating to the M600. For a brief time it was a hot topic there.
Oh, here's something a bit important for some of us. The M600 can accomidate most mics up to the size of a U47. Anything larger though, and it won't fit in the shockmount. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

GH,
Here are two short recordings using the two different mounts. The recordings are plain-jane. No compression/limiting or processing for noise reduction. I used a single-tube pre-amp on my AKG C3000B.
Here's the standard shock-mount recording:

Here's the M600 shock-mount recording:

Lemme know if you can hear something I don't.

I don't care who is using it, or what it "sounds" like, if indeed, it makes any difference at all over a plastic and elastic $30 shockmount, which I seriously doubt.
It is... hideous. |

Look! The Emperor has no clothes!
Sound Engineer in an unidentified New York studio "Hey Joe!"
Joe "Jimi Hendrix!"
Sound Engineer "I hadn't finished."
Joe "Sorry, go ahead"
Sound Engineer "Your sound, it's SO much better today!"
Joe "Really? It could be my new mic mount. Can you see it on my webcam?"
Sound Engineer "No. Can't see a thing for all those cans of Guinness. Where did they come from?"
Joe - COUGHS LOUDLY
A Promo Producer snores in the background

I'm guessing that the people who have spoken up for the M600 wouldn't do it just because they have nothing better to do with their time. As a self confessed technical moron I am more than willing to be guided by some of the best recording engineers in the world, I'm stupid but I'm not THAT stupid! Also, something that looks vaguely industrial in my wee huttie will help me kid myself that I actually work for a living. I may sprinkle coal dust and pespiration on one to help reinforce my delusion.

I do (& prefer the M600 of the two reads), but in all honesty, without recording onto two identical mics at the same time (one with the M600, one without), there's no true way to determine if one is "better" than another. Position of the mic, the source, etc. could have changed just enough to affect the recording. Additionally, I'm not a fan of trying to judge things recorded into MP3 or any other lossy format.
This leads me to the same conclusion as you found (i.e., I can't tell with any true accuracy), but for different reasons, if that makes any sense.
Like I said, I did prefer the read with the M600, but there are tons of things which could have been different that caused me to like that read better (including listener bias).
All I know is that I've not been the hugest fan of several of the shockmounts available for my U47 and RM2J (a lot of the "vintage remakes" had poor QC in my opinion), so for me the M600 was a welcome addition.
Very cool stuff though, thanks CourVO _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Thanks for taking the interest, Greg.... I liked the M600 read the best too... but like you said.... lots of variables... and nothing blatantly that different.

Yeah, we had this debate on gearslutz a while back, and ran into the same problem. Not quite sure whether the folks testing the M600 ever decided to do a formal test.
Ironically, we preferred the use of the M600 then as well, but again, too many variables were un-accounted for. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser
