I don't use headphones when I record, but would like to have the option. I do use headphones when I edit. The editing headphones are plugged into the SB Audigy 2 soundcard that came with my computer. Since a different soundcard is used for recording, of course I don't hear anything through those headphones when the mic is in use.
My dumb question is, where do I plug in headphones for use during recording?
Signal chain is mic to John Hardy M1 preamp to Echo Mia-Midi sound card to Adobe Audition 1.5, Windows XP Pro, Dell computer ....
Thanks |

Mary,
Does the John Hardy pre-amp have a headphone connection? If so, that's where you'd want to plug them in. Oh, and there are no dumb questions, only dumb answers. (This might just be one such example.) _________________ Be well,

No, there is no headphone connection, just an XLR jack for the mic and an XLR output jack for the line out to my soundcard.
If I end up having to get a mixer or other device, it would be nice to have a talk-back function.
But I would so like not to have to get another device.... |

You may also use BOTH cards by choosing the input to be routed to the SB Audigy... then:
The "Speakers" port IS the headphone port on the SB Audigy 2. If you have a small mixer you may also use the "line out" port into a mixer for using you headphones, thus you would have the speakers and headphones... and yes, this way you may also monitor "live" while recording.
Or, by selecting the SB Audigy 2 as a track to monitor when recording in AA, this will give you headphone output from the card. Using BOTH cards can be tricky, as they may be using the same resources - check for conflicts.

Currently the playback device is the SB card, and the recording device is the Echo soundcard. The "editing" headphones are plugged into the speakers' jack on the SB card. Sorry the screen shots aren't better.
The Echo is a better card, so I want it to be the one doing the recording. But the Echo Mia doesn't seem to have a headphone jack. If I were to add a mixer or a headphone amplifier, presumably it would plug into one of the output jacks on the Echo Mia (?).
Thanks so much, Bob, Greg, & Frank! |

With the SB Audigy 2, you can monitor everything which is audio on your computer. This is in the Windows Recording Mixer controls (you can get to this in AA), Once there, select the "What You Hear" control box and you should - I repeat that - should be able to hear yourself when recording through the Mia.
Oftentimes you will also need to select the Analog Mix control or select them and de-select them several times to make it work properly... but this SHOULD work for your desires.
When playing back, select only the Analog Mix control after de-selecting the "What You Hear" control.
Good luck Mary.

If you want talkback feature, and want to monitor off the Echo Mia (a better choice) this is about the cheapest entry into a monitor controller which would fullfill your needs. http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1650
Under $100 online.
You can connect speakers to it as well, if you ever want to work sans headphones when you are editing.
You'll need to monitor the output of the Echo Mia when you go to Source Connect, so either this unit or just a simple mixer will be needed eventually. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

George, that's cool - thanks!
Frank - I haven't had time yet (or the nerve actually) to try your solution, but I'm going to try it - thank-you.
I was going to thank Todd for not jacking this thread but I was too late |

Here's my monitor setup. I use two small mixers, one for input and one for output control.
INPUT: Mic/pre into mixer > main outs to the Mia input.
OUTPUT: Mia out into mixer > main outs to monitors.
TRS cables all the way.
I plug my phones into the INPUT mixer and monitor while recording.
I still have the SB card in my computer...I just don't use it. I listen to ALL audio through the Mia (regular windoze sounds and all). |
