Willie,
Good stuff. I especially like the new tube mic with the switchable capsules. _________________ Be well,

There are more new toys available from a variety of manufacturers in the world of microphones this year. The availability of USB connections, podcasting, and a plethora of recording software is making "professional quality home recording" a desktop or laptop staple item.
Watch for more than 23 new USB microphones and devices geared toward the musician, VO, and recording industry in the next few weeks. Some of them are looking really interesting.
MXL is stepping up their quality and performance with their new line of products. I am looking forward to seeing great things from Marshall/MXL in the coming years.
The "shotgun" microphones from MXL are very intriguing, but a new version of the AT SGM series is going to take the cake in that arena for low cost high quality ENG/EFP field audio acquisition.
Thank you for the "heads up"!
Toodles

Thanks for the news. You're the one who told me to wait a few weeks.
Here I was last month, heartily researching the CEntrance Micport Pro as an XLR to USB interface, and along comes the MXL Mic Mate Pro.
It looks like they took heed of the two chief comlaints regarding the Micport, which were:
The location of the phantom power switch is crammed in right next to the headphone and USB jacks.
The "USB active" light-up ring that covered up the XLR's locking/latching button. (Looks like the Mic Mate has a small red LED instead, but you can't see the XLR connection in the photo).
Essentially, from a design standpoint, they sure do look an awful lot alike!

Let us know if anyone gets the chance to compare these two units side by side. Last I checked, the Micport Pro is still $125. No projected price set for the Mic Mate Pro yet. _________________ Carl Welden

Do you have a link to the MXL Mic Mate Pro? I checked a couple of places and could only find the MXL Mic Mate (no Pro).
Thanks! _________________ Lou Zucaro

The original post has a link to a F file that has pictures of the Mic Mate Pro on page #1. I don't think any other pictures exist in the cybersphere yet, the release is that new. _________________ Carl Welden

I demoed the MXL USB 008-24 with built in zero latency monitoring (not on their website yet) at NAMM and I was quite impressed. It is the same as the 008, with the addition of three knobs to adjust gain, monitor level, and monitor mix, and a headphone jack. First USB mic I could actually recommend, based on my brief experience with it. See it here:

Thanks, George. I was really impressed with the quality and sound of the USB 008. First impressions 008
But the USB 009-24 should be awesome. I appeciate you sharing that.
I really do like the sound of the little V88 transformerless condenser. New VO Mic
We have been asked to do a shoot-out with the V88 and the Senn 416 on an image spot--it's that strong. Should be very interesting.
It is getting exciting, like Frank said, with all the rumblings of new products headed our way in the immediate future. Please let us know when anyone hears about the new gear. _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

Todd
could you provide more detail on that "tube swap" on the MXL V69 - mogami edition?
i've had one for almost a year now. purchased it on the recommendation of one regular client studio and did notice an improvement in the sound of my voice. however, it has a bit of a noise floor (don't know if that's the right term) that bob souer says is normal for tube mics. another regular studio hates the thing and wants me to use my old RE20 instead of the MXL.
do you think the tube you mentioned would solve my problem? i was on the verge of buying yet another new mic....which i cannot really afford.
as always, any enlightenment is much appreciated. _________________ rowell gormon

rowell - well ... on the recommendation of an engineer friend, i swapped out the cheap-o chinese tube with a NOS mullard 12at7 ... i am told the rca 12at7 tubes work really well also. i got my mullard on ebay ... but google it - you'll find lots of venues for NOS tubes.
instructions are here
note - the two tiny screws under the capsule are a beeee-OCH to get out.
good luck and, of course, ymmv. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

thanks to todd for the extra info.
i did some more reading and found some postings that also cited a slightly more expensive tube replacement (GE Triple Mica 6072a), which was supposedly recommended by the MXL's designer.
since i only want to do this once, does anyone have a recommendation on which tube i should spring for? would the 6072a be any quieter? (also thanks to todd, i have a step-by-step photoguide on how to carefully do this!)
again...many thanks for the information. _________________ rowell gormon

The 6072 is used in a lot of tube mics. I have one in mine. The one I have is military grade. It is really quiet. I also had the V69 Mogami. I tried a number of different tubes in it. The one that worked best for me was an old nos tesla ECC803S. It's a rare prototype tube that is an exact copy of the telefunken ecc803s. This tube is supposed to be one of the most musical. I would have liked to hear the 6072 in the V69 though.
I still have the tube. I paid 60.00 for it. But I no longer have the mic. Here is a great site all about tubes. Even a little chart that shows you the sound you can expect from them. https://www.tubeworld.com/12ax7.htm Hope that helps. there are some steel case tubes that I would have liked to try. However, they are quite pricey. Check ebay...they have lots. The 6072 is a good clean tube. Make sure to get the military grade one if you go with that one. |
