My current logo designer looks like he won't be able to commit to my project so I'm on the hunt for a new designer. I'm thinking about hitting Guru.com or Craigslist. I'm a little wary of paying someone based off their portfolio alone, so is it fair to ask for a rough proof of concept from applicants? Kind of like how we send a sample audition?

I've never heard of that being done, and I've worked with a number of graphic designers. They typically offer up their past work as proof of their abilities. But, you could ask!

Not that my branding is the pinnacle of marketing concepts, but I went to logojeez.com to get mine done. I knew the concept I wanted, the tag line, and I also gave them examples of sites where I loved the "look" and didn't like the "look" so they knew my taste. I received five different "logos" to choose from... and then I had up to three revisions on the one I chose. I think it was like $250. If you know what you like, it could be worth it.

Or just make a random call to anyone in Cincinnati. It seems like there are as many graphic designers here as there are non-working actors in LA. I think the statistic is something like 75% of the products on your grocer's shelf had logos and packaging designed in Cincy.

I went to Guru for design myself. Interesting process being on the other end. I received ideas from all over the spectrum. The one I worked with received nothing from me until I had approved an idea. That included a lot of back and forth for different concepts.

If you want more info, PM me or call. I'd be happy to give you my perspective on the process I went through.

Logojeez says:

Quote:
You can put faith on our simple and honest satisfaction guarantee. As per our satisfaction guarantee, if you do not like the concepts that we send, simply contact us and ask for revisions. Our design team will work on your logo until you are 100% satisfied.

However for some reason, if you do not like the initial logo concepts, ask us for a refund before the first revision round. We will provide you a 100% immediate refund of your amount. Our refund would be without any service charges deductions!

Isn't that basically the same thing?

Not really— the first paragraph says work will stay in motion until satisfaction is achieved, the 2nd says you may call a halt to the work and receive a refund.

Hey Jeff,

actually looking through a portfolio or a watermarked proof is not uncommon.

If you want, I can pass a reference to the guys at servaunt (Marcus is a friend and is working on my logo as we speak... I like what he's done thus far). Pricing is pretty reasonable IMO as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, Yoda. But what is your definition of "reasonable"?

Bob, Guru is promising since we can use the escrow program. That way I won't need a proof of concept. They just won't get paid until I'm happy.

100-125 for logo and typesetting for address labels, promotional stuff, etc.
(two logos actually, and formatted for multiple usages which saves me a ton of time).

That is quite reasonable.

That's how it worked out for me. She worked up a lot of different concepts before coming to one I really liked.

The rate was right around what has been listed here as "reasonable".

Hey Jeff,

I don't know many (any?) designers who would provide a proof of concept for no fee. I imagine there are some out there, I've just never heard of that.

When I was shopping for somebody to do my logo work, I contacted probably a dozen artists. Four or five got back to me within 4 days. One got back to me within 24 hours, and as I continued the conversation with him, it seemed to me that he "got it".

I love what he ended up doing, which came out even better than what I had imagined.

So although I can understand your hesitance, just trust your gut when you're talking to somebody, and make sure you're picking somebody who's already done the exact style you're looking for.

Lou Z.

good advice, Lou. And your logo is proof that you chose well.
