Three Things

Willie, JR is as you know the last American hero, according to Thomas Wolfe and the movie. Regarding the microphone placements, I would put a shot gun on a C-stand and a TR-50 on an Electrosonic wireless. Each microphone panned to a separate track. Naturally I would dress the TR-50 so it would not read on camera. This has been a standard in video for years. It will blend well and provide a larger sonic space ( I taught production sound for film and video at Piedmont Community College and at NCSA film school.

The country ham is really produced by Russell Gambill's company, yes a cousin. I was visiting with him ( Jr. ) several years ago and thought that the biscuit I was eating was one he made from scratch. He mother taught him how. Then he smiled real big and pulled out a bag of frozen bisques. Damn nation!

Thank you for fixing my typo. Any time dear woman. The VO-BB Night Before was lovely and it was done with a plethora of microphones. The LA studio gig with Don L and other was on a 103 for sure maybe 147

C12 and 251 are rare birds few can enjoy. The best I can do is get the inspired version by John Peluso and I’m guessing it will blow the door of most microphones and the C12 and 251 will just blaze on by. I also agree that most folks don’t know how to work a line gradient microphone properly. There is just as much skill in placement as the gear when it come to recording a good read.

OK, I'll come clean.... I'm the guy Frank just counseled on the purchase of a new Sennheiser MHK416 P48superwhizbangonehelluvamic

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH NAMING THESE MICS ANYWAY....!!!!???

Is there some sort of competition among mic manufacturers to give their new models the most arcane designations possible...!!!???

Ahem....anyway... back to the Sennheiser.

I answered an E-bay ad for the mic before I even realized the seller was 5 miles away in Henderson, NV!!
I figured that was a sure-fire sign it was meant to be.

'Picked it up today, and plugged it into my system for the first time tonite. OMG!.... I think I'm in love!

I could tell Frank wasn't all that impressed when I asked him about it. I asked him to "Say nice things" even before I told him....and yes, he did counsel me that it would be good "for my voice". I think he was right.

'Best thing about the purchase? A guy who runs a local studio sold it to me, and with any luck, I'll be getting some work from him.... on my Sennheiser of course!

my gosh all you rich VO folks! I have complete mic envy since I'm working on a AT3035 which I bought new for a whopping $200!

I wonder if a better mic would pull something out of my voice that I didn't know was there.

I am proud of Dave, he took a chance (even knowing my opinion before hand), and has become blessed for being bold.

As I have said before, some voices can use the specifications of the shotgun (not Shogun) microphone, most female voices are not a match for shotgun microphones, bass voices are not a good match either.

Mid and upper baritones, tenors, and some low altos can see some great recording success with the focused aperture of cardioid condenser microphones when used for voiceover.

When recording location sound for film or video, when the need for high quality sound from a distance - three or more feet from the microphone with some extraneous noise cancellation - a shotgun microphone is a great tool.

You can use carpenters tools to do brain surgery, but why?

Use the right tool for the right job, and you will be more apt to succeed.

As for "rich"? Not on my income or budget... I am just old and have been collecting microphones for a long, long, long, long time.

Once upon a time in the in the land of tar pits, because actor could not deliver their lines, or the environment was too noisy, the method known as ADR (additional dialogue recording) can in to being.

It was the normal practice to use the same mic in the ADR session as was used on location. Now before the German microphone took over in popularity (not the us of popularity and not standard) the RCA and Western Electric(WE) Mic were used on stage,location and ADR. These also are awesome VO microphones as well. Walter Winchell used a Birdcage type WE, and a ton of folks use the RCA 44 and 77.

Then come the German invasion and the sound mixer (recording engineer on stage and location sets) start using the Sennheiser microphones and naturally the ADR engineers started using the Sennheiser as well for ADR work. Many of the ADR engineer also did VO recording work when not doing ADR work. Things being what they were, the Sennheiser started to be used more and more for VO work. It was the change in production recording equipment that gave rise to the ADR folks using the Sennheiser. Now for a little history. If any one remembers the Hill St Blues series then you were listen to dialogue recorded with Audio-Technica shotguns. So all the ADR would like wise be done with the same model AT.

Still yet if you have never used a microphone, vintage or new, with the C12 capsule and the AKG circuit, then you have a ear opening experience coming.

If and when Frank set a place and date for a Talk-In , I will bring some of my collection and John Peluso has agree to let me bring some of his product line for comparative listening. I will even bring Pelusos U-47 inspired the 22-47 LE and/or 22-247 SE.

Now that we have come this far in the discussion of microphones, shall we speak of the "Three C's" (Yes, just as with diamond's) of microphone lore: Color, Cut (frequency) and Clarity?

Please note: I made a mistake with an earlier post. I do have more than just Schoeps shotguns in my collection (sorry).

After cruising the shelves and closets, I found I have some Azden, a few ATR-55's (the old style with XLR connections), a couple AT835B's, and old EV-644, a vintage EV DL-42, a Rode NTG, a few of the Sennheiser ME series, and OSP or three, and associated blimps, furries, and carbon fiber boompoles. I had forgotten about them as they were in the "location kit", which I do not do (personally) anymore.

See how fast a few microphones can add up to a lot?

TLM103 for some, M147/149 (tough to tell from angle) for others.

Wow! This is such a great thread. I've been contemplating purchasing a MKH-416 and have found the info here very helpful.

So, if not a MKH-416, what would be a better alternative that is in the same price range or less as the 416?

Brian -- Good point. I know folks like Rodney Saulsberry use the 416 for everything , but for me it would be more for Promos, Trailers and Imaging.

I live about 1.5 hrs from John Peluso and have visited his lab. His 22-251 or 22-47 SE would be great microphone for VO work.

Now if you want to save a lot of money and have a good pre and have Quad cable, consider a SM57.

Yea I know that comment about the 57 will get some responses.

Peluso / 416 -- Totally different mics for totally different uses. Both fabulous ... for a lot of people. Different tools for different uses.
Try them all before you decide.
