Almost every new PC comes with Vista now, unfortunately. If you order your PC from Dell or Gateway, you can request to have XP installed instead of Vista. Also request to do a CLEAN install WITHOUT all the extra "free" garbage software. Immediately remove McAfee or Norton Anti Virus programs, if they are installed, as they hog CPU and memory resources. Most of the new PC's in the "BTX" style cases are very quiet now. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

OK...since you brought it up...You're right, McAfee is TOTALLY bogging down my brand new XP system...but what's the alternative? I don't want to be without a firewall or virus scan, right?....
I'd LOVE to have another option.....

Liz,
What about ---> AVG that has been discussed previously? Haven't used it, but am seriously considering.
Also, would be interested in comments about what I've done...i.e., disabling anti-virus during v.o. sessions/editing/etc. and pulling the internet connection. _________________ Brett

I use ZoneAlarm with Anti-virus. You can set it to run updates and scans when you're not likely to be doing work on the machine. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Before I left Windows for Mac, I used AVG for several years, works perfectly, uses little system resources. I recommend AVG to my clients, just the free version, and they have an Anti Spywear free version now. Another good Anti spywear a is Ad-Aware, and guess what... It is FREE.
Audacity- Free.
AVG- Free
Ad-Aware- Free
Our advice- Free
Cool, huh?

Hey Chris,
Check out Rain Recording at www.rainrecording.com . They design desktops and laptops specifically for audio. Everything is built in their factory in New Jersey.
If you don't like what they have to offer they will customize something for you. I'm in the market too, and these guys seem to be pretty sharp. Check out the site or give them a call. They take the time to find out exactly what you need in a PC or Laptop.

Just a suggestion for a new or any VO cpu. I have two hard drives in removable racks. At least two nights a week I backup the main drive using the standard copy software that Seagate offers. (Seagate is the drive I use) It has saved my life twice when a main drive fails. I removed the main drive, changed the jumper to master on the backup and within five minutes I was up and running again.

Hey Mike,
Funny you should mention them... I was doing some research this morning and came across this comparison between Rain, Sweetwater, and the company that did the comparison, ADK. Looks like (for the lower-end machines anyways) that the ADK stuff seems to give a little more bang for the buck. ADK also mentions Sonica as having good stuff, here's their lower-end machine ... either way I think I've pretty much eliminated Sweetwater from consideration. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker
