What Chrissy needs is a good, easy to use/easy to learn app for VO recording only. PT was overkill for her anyway...we can thank the GC guys for sending her down that path.

How 'bout some recommendations for a simple recording/editing app and a USB interface that will give her phantom power for her mic and output for her powered monitors. She'll need to convert to 192k mp3 as well.

C'mon vo-bb'ers...a talent with limited tech chops needs you!

adobe audition is way easy to use.

a small mackie mixer is also easy. AA runs a few hundie--maybe $200-$300--and you can get a mackie mixer el cheapo, too.

i hesitate to say it, but you can opt for the behringer teeny mixer (eurorack ub802) , allowing for phantom power (but i'm not sure about usb interface) for $50. or look for a good used mackie.

usb interface? do you mean the ability to plug into usb at computer? i do that.

GC and others are known to push Digidesign products onto people that really don't need them, I've seen it happen a few times to some of my clients.

I give my vote to the M-Audio Fastrack Pro USB. It has separate monitor and headphone level controls, very similar control and feature set of the Mbox, and runs $200.

Buy it from a shop with a return policy just in case you have compatibility issues with your PC. There are NO guarantees for 100% compatibility from any manufacturer with PC's in general. There are just too many variations in chipsets, video cards, and such.

For software, many PC users love Sound Forge, and the "Audio Studio" home version for $60 could serve you well. You can download a demo to see if you like it from Sony. Give Audacity a shot (free), it might be all you need for now.

You've just nailed my recommendation as well. The M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB is working great in my set-up and is a huge improvement over my M-Audio MobilePre USB. The full Sound Forge is a terrific program, but the Studio version is much less expensive and will do just fine for recording mono voice tracks.

Count me as another fan of Sound Forge... been using it as my primary recording a Hobo Tounge

at home for years. Both the full version and the VERY reasonably priced studio version come with a lot of very useful plug-ins, some of which are even better than the overpriced stuff I use at ye olde day job.

I've got a super simple setup. An ART tube USB going right into the computer. I don't need a mixer, cause I have only one voice. If I need to mix anything, I do it in post in Adobe Audition.

Sound forge os great as well. But if you want cheap and simple, download audacity. Works great.

Though I don't use it myself, I know several who do and are very happy with it. That combined with any of the hardware audio interfaces mentioned above will provide you with all that you need. And since it's shareware, you can even try it free before you buy it to be sure it will do what you want and need.

Thanks again gang for continuing to make suggestions. I've been attempting to research the equipment you all have mentioned. I'm considering the M-Audio Fast - Track - Pro. It's listed at Full Compass for $176.25. Also at Full Compass the Sony SoundForge - Studio -9 Sound Forge Audio Studio. Listed for $69.95. I'm also checking out the Goldwave site and forum.

Obviously I'll need to sell my M Box 2 mini.

Any other comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I was indeed thinking of Goldwave.

I have looked into Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Sony Sound Forge and others.

I decided that I have no need for multitracking and have no reason to spend two hundred or three hundred dollars or more for a digital audio program. I looked into Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio (a lower cost product than the full Sound Forge software) - I even loaded it and used it for a while. It costs more, offers less and is more difficult to use. I have also had a couple of others - Diamond Cut 6 is still on my computer and I don't use it. I tried Wave Pad and decided it didn't offer as much as Goldwave and I got rid of it too.

I am always willing to take a look at ways to improve whatever I have or replace something if I can find something else that is clearly better. So far, for me, Goldwave gets it done with absolutely zero hassle, it's very intuitive so the learning curve is no sweat, it has a lengthy list of the most useful and useable tools, updates and revisions are always free, there is an active online message board where users help each other - and get this - the developer often participates and offers his help and looks for suggestions from users.

I use PT mostly, but use Goldwave when travelling. I Still need a multi track program option when I need it, especially if mixing sfx and/or music with the v/o.
