ISC2, SANS, CERT and guys like myself who've developed several nasties specifically for that platform would disagree with you.

Frankly, speaking as an uber-paranoid, I don't recommend EVER having your primary studio DAW connected to the Internet. If you must (budget, necessity, etc), then establish a habit of a weekly (or more often) backups on your system.
Right now I'm using NetBackup on my home network on a daily basis. The DAW in the new room will not have direct access to anything outside of the internal network (and is protected from that as well). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I wasn't trying to get the old Mac vs PC discussion going. If that's what some of you read in my entry, then I'm sorry. Maybe I should have added "and in my situation..." , for I just put down the facts. I work with both Macs and PC's everyday and need them both. No pun intended. Maybe I chose the wrong words for something I thought was the harmless truth. My native tongue isn't English, so correct me please if I mess up.
Sincere apologies if my entry was interpreted otherwise. |

Chrissy's problem seems to be mostly confined to playback...and not all the time either,
The system will record long files with no problem at all...but on playback it will, at times, throw up that buffer error. We noticed the other night also that this happens when trying to use the scrub tool.
Looking at the Windows system monitor, the cpu's getting hit pretty hard with almost 100% shown on the usage graph. I did go in and take a few things out of the startup items....beginning to think that ditching the Norton might be a good solution.
Chris - Give me a call in the CT studio this afternoon. I'll talk you through un-installing Norton and installing AVG...it's easy stuff. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Yah, I've seen that error message on a Mac as well. Much less infrequent, but it does happen.
And wow, I can't believe I actually participated with useful discussion in the Gear thread!!! That's my payback to all of you!!! (I have more to go for all the help I've received here). _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

As it is my job to play Devil's Advocate and stir up any and all hornets nest...
"Mac and Windows are *(@&##. Scah-rew 'em both! Get Linux and install The Ardour Digital Audio Workstation."
" Mr. Hand, it's available for Mac OS X."
"Well then, Scah-rew Slow-Tools and Winblows."
By the way, if anyone ever does give this a shot, please post a review somewhere...

Kevin,
I have a Linux workstation that I use for a lot of my "regular" computing. I'll check this out and let you know. _________________ Be well,

Yoda brings up a good point on PT compatibility (I think the link is http://www.digidesign.com/compato/ )
I installed my friend's Mbox earlier this year to what I THOUGHT was a compatible PC - but turns out the bus speed on the mobo was too slow. It wasn't after carefully reviewing the Digi Compato site that we narrowed it down. Had the guy that built it go to the Digi site and build him a PC above/to spec and BOOM - all was good in his world.
You can waste MANY hours trying to troubleshoot a PT setup on a PC if you haven't combed over the compato site in detail.
PEACE.

Yeah, I've built a few PT DAWs in the past year for folks. If you check the basic specs related to mobo chipsets, etc you're usually 80% of the way there.
While it's not confirmed by DD, I can confirm that Q6600s (Intel Core 2 Quad chipset) are compatible with PT. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

One thing perhaps that may also help is to adjust your computer's virtual memory to the highest setting possible. _________________ Bobbin Beam

Let's not get into the childish Mac versus PC thing. No one wins those wars whatsoever.
Besides, does anyone actually use PC's anymore? |

Yeah I understand the smilie, but it's still irritating to some folks to see it anyway.

I've been routinely weening my Mac using clients off Pro Tools over the last few months. There are so many problems with errors like yours that cost them a lot of money to fix (paying me). I save them money and time by showing them Audacity or Sound Studio (for Mac). Anything to increase productivity and reliability is what I will try. Funny enough, the users that have the least Pro Tools problems are running PT 6.9 and earlier. Even when their Mac updates itself "mysteriously", to 10.4.11, PT 6.9 keeps chuggin', while 7 or higher does not. Curious indeed, considering Digidesign doesn't qualify 6.9 and earlier to run on Mac OS 10.4.7 (if memory serves) and higher. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I want to thank everyone for all of the suggestions and help you've given me. Chuck Davis has given a lot of his time including daily e-mails back and forth. I also went on the DUC support forum. It seems that my computer may well not be compatible with Pro Tools. I can't afford another computer. I'm about to use the free www.sisoftware.co.uk site to make sure that this is indeed the problem.
If my PC isn't compatible I'll sell the Mbox and Pro Tolls software and try and figure out what I can get. I need some easy to use software and audio interface for my mic/monitors. I'm going through the archives and once I do that I'll start a new help topic.
Thanks again. Everyone's generosity with time, help and suggestions is greatly appreciated.
