So, on New Year's Day, my hubby, along with two of his brothers (from CA and IL) went to the Outback Bowl in Tampa to see Wisconsin and Tennessee play. His brothers went to Wisconsin, but I was secretly rooting for Tennessee to win (being in the SEC and all. We couldn't get tix to the Gator game... just as well).
The Tampa Bay Bucs stadium is very cool... in the north end zone, they have a wood deck and with a pirate ship at one end. During Bucs games, they shoot the cannon everytime the Bucs score... very cool.
So, my husband and I were standing there, front and center with the goal post, at the beginning of the festivities, when, all of the sudden, completely out of no where, we hear this deafening roar (and I do mean deafening... you couldn't hear anyone... just the roar)... and within a nanosecond, coming right at us, it seemed (ok they were really above us, but seriously, they were sooooo low, practically in the stadium) in absolute perfect formation, come three of these bad boys, right at us and over our heads.
It was the coolest thing of the whole day. Seriously. I've seen them at air shows, and watched them fly around NYC on 9/11, but that flyover was incredible.
Hubby says they were going very very slowly... that their normal speed is somewhere around 1500 mph. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

That was the AV-8B Harrier Jet... also capable of vertical take off... a very cool aircraft to see up close... it hovers. I saw a bunch of them in repair at Cherry Point. Bob knows where that place is.

That is really a neat feeling. I remember being at an Oklahoma game a number of years ago when I experienced it. At first you feel, more than hear, them coming. The sound begins to rise and rise and RISE. Just when I thought I would panic and that the whole world was crumbling around me four F4 Phantoms broke over the stadium wall directly behind us.
It was such an emotional experience for me. It still gives me chills.
I know I would never want to be on the ground with them coming FOR me.
WOW!!! I just love fly-overs. _________________ Ron Phillips

Caryn & Ron,
I can COMPLETELY relate to the feeling you're talking about. I walked out of my studio to grab some lunch today, and just before I got to my car, I had the same "out-of-nowhere" deafening roar coming at me. Except I had ABSOLUTELY no idea what it was, or what was going on for about 2 terrifying seconds, when I saw four F-16s, F4s, AV-8Bs, heck I don't know what they were, screaming over my head. After I mopped up the small but growing puddle around my shoes, I put the pieces together and figured out what was going on.
You see, my studio is a mile and a half away from Dolphin Stadium, which was getting ready to host the Orange Bowl game, and the guys were just doing a run-through of their official flyover scheduled for a few hours later. There were a few banner planes already circling the stadium, and I guess the jet pilots decided to stay to the north of the stadium for their practice run.
Scared the buh-jeezus outta' me, but then I sat on my hood for the next 10 minutes and just watched those ultra-cool Top Gun dudes play around up there. Quite the sight to see. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

Here's another view.

Very cool pics.
Wow, Doug, that's cool. Your own private air show.
It really was an incredible feeling. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

The Blue Angels have a practice field about a mile from where I'm currently living. It's an awesome sight when they're in town.
I saw a B2 do a flyover at the Lowe's speedway outside of Charlotte... 2 years ago I think it was. Way cool. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

I lived in Pensacola, FL for a little over 20 years and it was awesome to be driving over the bay bridge and have those guys buzz you!!!
Something that was really cool was that media people would be taken up for a ride with the Blue Angels a few days before each show. You had to get on a list for the drawing each time.
Plus, when they were in town they would practice every Wednesday and anyone could go out to the Navy base and watch em. Then after practice, they would be at the Museum of Naval Aviation to meet and greet and sign autographs.
The Blue Angels perform 2 shows a year there. One on their home base, NAS Pensacola and the summer show over Pensacola Beach. If you ever get a chance to see them, don't miss it! _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs
