I send out a monthly newsletter to those e-mail addresses I have personally and individually acquired. Occasionally, I get a reply asking for removal from the contact list. I perform the removal immediately, provided they are, indeed, on my contact list.

I have, for 2 months now, received a remove e-mail from an apparent recipient. Here's the rub. He refuses to open the newsletter and use the unsubscribe link at the bottom. That's fine. I understand. However, his remove e-mail obviously comes from a different e-mail address than the one to which I send him the newsletter. It is NOT a reply. That, too is understandable.

I have written him numerous times in response to his removal request informing him that the e-mail address he uses to demand removal does not exist in my contact list and request that he merely provide me with the e-mail address to which I'm sending my newsletter. I've searched my contact list through various filters; name (first and last), domain and any parts thereof.

He refuses to provide same.

I have been accused of being a "SPAMMER" which I am not, never have been, nor ever intend to be. I have also been threatened with legal action and I'd truly like to avoid that. It could all be resolved if I only had the contact address. It would be so easy for both of us.

How do I make this guy happy without foregoing my monthly newsletter mailings?

Any ideas or comments are certainly welcome.

I'm not a lawyer, but according to the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, you are not a spammer since you have given the recipient a mechanism by which to unsubscribe. You might want to review the above doc to see if you are in full compliance.

If the person freaks out again, I'd politely tell him that the address he is currently using is not in your database and here is a link to unsubscribe.

Doc,

Could you ask him to forward you the unopened newsletter? Maybe ask him to (if he understands how to do so) turn on full headers before he forwards the email to you? That way, even if the recipient email address isn't in the forward, if you get the full header information you can suss out the domain through which the email is passing to get to him and thus remove him from your list.

I truly appreciate your suggestions. I'll peruse the link you provided, Jeff. Bob-this guy wants no more communication from me. He put that in no uncertain terms.

And, I tend to agree that because I've responded to his requests for removal and he refuses to cooperate, his chances for "retribution" are next to none. I just want to lose him fast.

Wouldn't you think that someone who operates an internet business would be able to understand that it's impossible to remove an email addy without any clue what it is? Secondly, now I have another of his e-mail addresses!

Or, is it just me?

I realize that this is part of doing virtual business. But, this guy has become impossible.

I agree with Bob; ask him to forward the newsletter to you so that you can insure you get the correct address removed. I'd explain that the one he's using to contact you isn't in your database, so there must be some other address of theirs that is in your database,

You can't help him if he doesn't want to help you.

Then save copies of all of your correspondence to show you made a good-faith effort to respond to his requests.

The world would be so much better if all the grown-ups acted as such.

I've done anything and everything in my power to appease this guy and he's just not having any part of it.

Send him an email from a different address. Give him the parameters of removal from your list (unsubscribe), and let HIM know he is in violation of the law and you will take legal action if necessary.

Get pissy - I know I would, but then again, I am old, fat, and sassy and can get away with a lot.

As a possible last resort...how many on your mass email newsletter list? If it's fewer than 50 or so, it might be worth your while to write each an individual email asking if they wish to continue receiving the newsletter. Then maybe by process of elimination you can determine the idiot's email address.

Just a thought.
