Dumb question maybe since I've never messed with the inside of a unit - but can you UN-mod it before you send it back? |

You should start looking for another way of recording while keeping your fan ON. That thing gets hot and even 1 or 2 degrees above normal operating temps can affect its performance. Reminds me of the days when I had time to overclock some of my PC's - people were SERIOUS about cooling... some obsessively so. I didn't listen and would've saved myself ALOT of troubleshooting time had I just simply supplied the proper cooling to the machines.
Cooling is EXTREMELY important for any machine that does processing - SOOOOO with that in mind, if you can't find a way to work around the noisy fan, then go to a PC expo or something and ask for their quietest fan and somehow attach that bad boy to your Zephyr.
Turning off your fan DURING a session and on during downtime is like having a hat on your head indoors and taking it off when you go out into the snow storm.
Hope that helps. Love ya!
PEACE.

I know what you mean, Anthony, but my live sessions are extremely few, so I haven't really spent much time with the unit on and the fan off.
I'm in a space roughly the size of a walk-in closet, so separation of gear and/or soundproofing is a sketchy proposition.
One that I am seriously examining, though— all too often, my family must rig for silent running while I work. I'd prefer to be able to just shut a door and get busy while they continue with their stuff.
Oh, boy— let's spend some money. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

i know what you mean girl (sounds like an echo right?). right now I've been testing "baby-girls-isolation" experiments since moving the studio into the basement AND have some people coming over today to measure for a double-door iso booth configuration. if THAT doesn't work then I'll be sending my kids off to boarding school at 2-years old. Either way it's money |

my roadrunner isdn box has always been fan-loud. but i keep it at my mixing console area with computer and other noisemakers and run my mic and headphones from the isolation booth a few steps away. making adjustments means i have to leave the booth for a moment, but for my space, it was the only answer i could come up with.
and i can sympathise with the telco detective work. after a horrendous problem some years ago, and some conference calls between the musicam tech, the telco tech, and me (guess which one didn't know what he was talking about...ahem), we tracked our trouble to a switch somewhere in kentucky.
about that same time, i asked another studio what they used and was told "sprint". i switched the long distance for those lines to sprint and haven't had any trouble since...as long as i remember to pay my bill.
i'm so paranoid about switching services that even though all my other phone business is with another company, i've left the sprint account in place.
who needs more trouble???
sincere hopes for the divine ms. d getting her gear back in gear real soon! _________________ rowell gormon

The main reason I built my booth was to remove all fan noise- no computer, no ISDN unit (the worst offender),. _________________ Bobbin Beam

Yeah, I need to build in some kinda iso-setup.
Biggest problem I have at the moment is my 15 square-foot desk that was "built in" to my studio when the wall was added.

The Xstream is fan free, if you might be considering one. It has other measures built in for cooling, which makes it nice to have in the booth for control sake. _________________ Ben

Yargh. No ISDN here, but I did send the whole family packing today - dog included, to prepare for a live session with a client who sounded like he wouldn't be very sympathetic if the dog barked or a kid decided the floor was lava and needed to jump from the sofa to the coffee table during the session. And when the client was 25 minutes late calling, the house got kind of chilly with the boiler switched off.
I too am thinking very seriously about isolation in 2008. |

Hey-- I had a dream that you got a new car, Ben.
I was at your house and you mentioned that you didn't know where the windshield wiper control was yet.

Funny, I was just gonna say, my Zephyr doesn't have fan noise, I wonder why? Guess that's why.
DB, I got my Xstream on eBay and I think I paid $2300 with shipping. There's hope.
I did have to put a quieter fan in my computer. Works like a charm. Though, I still do just shut down the computer during ISDN sessions.
I know someone who has a killer and very expensive studio in her home... floating floors... the works.... and even a 300 lb glass/soundproof door (can't recall the manufacturer at the moment), that when it shuts, closes like a vacuum (I really really want one of those someday!!!). It's beautiful, and generally, very soundproof, it seems. However, if a plane flies overhead, she has to stop recording. And, I think if lawn mowers are going nearby, that affects recording too.
So, is there a perfect answer? _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!
