Thanks for posting.

I'm curious though how whispering strains the voice.

Anybody?

Yeeaarrs ago...there was a tip going around that to deepen one's voice...you should whisper as loud as you can.

Try it for a while. You'll see--or feel.

For me, excessive whispering results in the same "grumblyness" one might encounter the day after screaming.

I love the added resonance because it adds a little bit of texture to balance out my otherwise flat-sounding tone. HOWEVER, that resonance comes at a price: I have far less control over my regular speaking voice (specifically in the higher ranges), and I find myself unable to perform certain character voices due to what can only be described as a "strained" sensation. Overall, it just kinda hurts.

Sometimes I frustrate myself with what I perceive as deficiencies in my vocal quality. When that happens, I always like to take a step back and recognize that until I'm a perfect actor, I have more important things to be worrying about.

Just keep it healthy!

I just found this from a New York Times Health Guide article via Google.

Does whispering strain the vocal cords more than trying to talk aloud when you have laryngitis? A. "Whispering requires more effort than normal speech," said Dr. Robert F. Ward, assistant professor of otolaryngology at Cornell University Medical Center in New York. "We believe it is equal to or more than yelling." Laryngitis usually results from inflammation of the vocal cords from a viral infection. In whispering, the swollen vocal cords are forced nearly together without letting them meet. It is like lying down and trying to hold your feet a little way off the floor for a long time, Dr. Ward explained. He gave another analogy: "It is not like softly plucking one string of a violin, but like trying to make the bow and the strings come very close together without touching. This requires more effort than relaxing and letting the bow drop on the strings.".

Hmmmm, I say.

There is a wealth of information on vocal care and problems here:

http://www.classicalsinger.com/magazine/archive.php

Access to the archives is free until December 31st. You just have to register for a free account. Search for articles written by Dr. Anthony Jahn. He's the medical director for the Metropolitan Opera and unlike many other ENT's he deals with people whose voices are their livelihood.

Next time you fly... ask the name of the person sitting next to you. If his name is Larry N. Gitis... ask for another seat.
And never... never... let him join the VO-BB.
