The fact that they want to license the software with the dongle is absurd.
I'd love to have one because I do NOT do recording when I travel but I do spend a fair amount of time editing stuff. Bringing along my Mbox would be a bad idea since it's my only workable interface, so the dongle is wicked spiffy.
The little SOB should be part of the package, though— when you buy an MBox 2 of any kind— like the iLoc. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Digidesign likes to make money and continue to keep a strangle hold on its users, that's why. They are STILL the 800 pound gorilla of the film/post/music industries (although less music now). The one thing going for Digidesign is their closed system helps guarantee support and reliability for its users. However, I am constantly asked how to fix the H/W Buffer errors or Pro Tools LE systems with rarely a consistent solution to the problem. If Pro Tools isn't a requirement, but very high quality sound and portability is, and you are Mac user, go for the Apogee Duet. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Might be nice, but I'd still need to have a decent audio editing program, and I really don't care for Garage Band that much.
I'm sure it's fine, but I know how to use Pro Tools.
Spending another $500 for a new hardware interface and another $300-$500 for software AND have to get used to the new software protocol seems like the wrong idea. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

If you haven't already, download a demo of Sound Studio. It is simple, but powerful, and is only $80. Once you've learned Pro Tools and are used to it, everything else will have a new learning curve.

I'll second Sound Studio. For basic mono or stereo editing, I believe it's the most intuitive and closest to ProTools in function. I bought an Mbox Mini and installed and use ProTools LE when needed for any multitrack work, but sometimes it does things that aggravate the crap out of me. Then I curse and disconnect it, and go back to Sound Studio until the next multitrack project comes along. |

I was thinking that might be a good way to record bird song in the field, although one would still need a parabolic reflector - not sure how to deal with that since the mics are internal. |
On that note, I've got an Edirol R-09. Love it. It's all I carry when travelling. I don't even carry a laptop any more. Last weekend I played a gig and recorded. The pianist I worked with couldn't believe the quality. Bass was really solid. We performed outdoors, too.
One of the drummers I play with has a H4. He loves it and usually uses it to record both practice sessions and gigs. I'd endorse buying either one of those babies. How can you go wrong for $350? You can USB connect to any decent machine (iMac or PC) and editing software is abundant, regardless of platform.
For field recording, those little units are really good. External mic's connections are easy. I haven't used mine for dry voice VO production work, yet. But, I'm confident that I'll not have any problem if the occasion arises.
The really amazing thing about the Edirol (and, probaby the other unit, too) is that I can get up to 5 hours of record time on one battery charge. And, it takes about 15 minutes to recharge.
Just consider it a "must have" piece of gear akin to a pre or mic, if you're looking for an excuse to get another device to enhance your opportunity get more work. X-mas is so very close. _________________ Charlie |

Nothing stopping you from recording into Audacity WHILE Pro Tools is running. Import the recorded track into ProTools afterwards. The ProTools dongle and MicPort combo will still take up less room than an M-Box.
Having said that, this M-Box micro p*sses me off.. Digidesign could come up with a challenge/response .. or use iLok authorization to protect their copywright, and then let us run their software with NO hardware. Instead they want to charge 250 bucks just for the right to run the software, which you buy separately. Good old ProTools 'free' ran with no hardware, and at the time was indispensable. I won't be getting a 'micro' anytime soon.
I'd love to be able to bring ProTools on the road, but have learned to work without it for the sake of convenience. _________________ Jeff Berlin

I read an article explaining some of the reasoning behind why Pro Tools is not more "up to speed" with some of the features the other software companies on the market have....such as the real time summing/lack of non-real time bounce capabilities that Pro Tools has. But, I think some of the things to keep in mind is that they cater to many HD clients that have been with them for years and to make software for PT LE that does more than what the HD systems can do without major re-programming efforts for all the TDM stuff etc, would sink them.
So the idea is that they are trying to serve two different client bases....ones who have spent $500 to $2,000 and those that have spent $10,000 to $100,000 and beyond. Who would you rather tick off?
You may disagree, but this is somewhat of a paraphrase from the article I read. _________________ Ben

I'm thoroughly enjoying this thread. I use ProTools at my home studio and don't relish dragging my M-Box for travel. I use GoldWave on the road, although it's not that easy of an editor. It is a wonderful conversion program, however. I may look into Sound Studio. Thanks for the tip.
Just curious if anyone else is familiar with Goldwave? _________________ Bobbin Beam

I just looked up Sound Studio and I guess I'm out of luck for now. It's Mac only! Now I'm downloading a free trial of Audition, just to check it out. _________________ Bobbin Beam

Bobbin,
I use GoldWave on ocassion, and am never disappointed.
Don Randall on this board is probably its most ardent apostle.
