Yesterday it was brunch at Brunton Farm, 11 of us. I wanted a friend to meet Fraser who is a marketing and business expert.

Ali has been thrown by the media sea onto the rocks a few too many times and needed some guidance. After some very pointed questions from Fraser, the responses to which puzzzled him, Alison suddenly proclaimed.

"It just doesn't seem to be working and I can't work out why?"

"Mmm," said Fraser. "Well, as far as I can tell it's because of you".

There were a number of people sat around the large kitchen table, amongst them Chloe and Charlotte (11 year old twins). Every few minutes I handed them money. What was going on? Fraser would make a suggestion, come up with a solution to a problem and every time he did so the response from Alison was the same.

"Oh yes I could do that! But of course ........" The excuse why not then followed. Before we left home I said to Anne that every time Alison uttered those words I would give the twins £1 ($2).

"So what are you going to do on Monday?" asked Fraser. He gave Alison a rock solid way ahead before asking the question. During the course of the conversation he asked the question several times, every time he received a different reply. What will she do today to lift her business, her career and her life out of the doldrums? Probably nothing.

Today is a good day to move forward. So, what are YOU going to do on Monday?

Great story, Mr. Banks. And a very good question, too.

I, for one, and am going to externalize some of the things I learned from my dessert with Bob Souer and my phone session with DB into making a better commercial demo reel. Also, some marketing insights.

1) How can I convey to potential clients that I'm the best person to solve their problem (they need a voice). Don't have an answer for this one yet, but realizing that our job is to solve that particular problem for the client has got me thinking about it from a different perspective.
2) On a performance level, I will work on channelling the kinetic energy of my reads into a more conversational tone, yet retaining the same emotional energy.

So that's what I'm doing Monday. Or was that a rhetorical question?

PHILIP!
Once again, you rock.
That's a great story...well actually it's pretty sad, but frankly it makes me realize how lucky I am.

Yes, there are days that I get down & frustrated, but I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for new ways to meet people, help people and move my business forward...I may not always reach my intended goal, but I DO know that it's all up to me...with a little help from my friends! Wink

So what am I going to do today?
- November is National Family Caregiver's Month. So today I'm going to get get in touch with local radio stations about airing a PSA I produced for the National Family Caregiver's Association & National Family Caregiver's Month. (BTW: If you hear it, let me know! The National Office and our nationwide network of volunteers are going to try & blast the country with it!)
- Invoice a new client for a job they approved on Friday
- Make the first payment on my new car! Rolls Eyes

I think a dinner at the Banks huttie should be on everyone's "10 things I need to do" list.

Perfectly timed missive Banksey. I am devoting the day to reworking a few of my demos. I am actually going to put them on the critique forum (finally ready to face the helpful and precise critique of my fellow dolphins).

I will also be doing a demo for a potential client. Stumbled across a web address for a MOH firm, wrote a quick note asking if they were accepting new talent and a link to my website. Got the answer Saturday, "Not accepting new talent, but like what you do and would love to consider adding you to our roster. Please send us examples from the attached scripts." Laugh

Philip,

Another of your legendary and thought-provoking posts. Today I'm spending the entire day on airplanes, flying home from Tacoma, WA. After I get there I'm going to kiss my wife Cinda thoroughly. Then kiss her again. Hug her and each of my children for several minutes. Have a spot of dinner and then record a script for one of my on-going clients that will arrive in my email while I'm flying because he'll need it back by first thing in the morning.

Meeting Jeffrey Kafer last night for dessert was truly wonderful. But, going home is the best.

I echo Moe's post:

This is exactly what I have been thinking of doing.

The further I get down the VO road, the more I cringe at the sound of my noobie demo. And I have mixed feelings about continuing to send it out to new prospects....or maybe in my case reworking the demo is just one more self-created diversion to avoid doing the least fun part of this biz----PROSPECTING FOR NEW BUSINESS---I don't know, but I will commit to this choice for today and live with the consequences.

I'm leaving to a studio in Burbank this morning to record a TV commercial, and then I'm coming home to sleep for the rest of the day. I'll get more ambitious later, I promise! (Good stuff, though.)

Last Wednesday, I had the rare opportunity to attend a function for which I provided the narration of the featured video presentation for Shell Oil. Smoozing with other attendees before dinner, several asked what line of work I was in... and of course I casually mentioned they could hear what I did a little later. At the conclusion of the evening on the way out, three people I had spoken to earlier asked me to give them a call on Monday... Bitchin So that's the story here...

Life and the VO biz have been very good to me. So much so, my wife resigned from her job today and now I am the soul provider for the household. She wants to stay at home with the kids and start writing, again. This is a Monday for the record books. Smile
