I've been searching and can't find any reference to what the talent fee breakdown would be if you are one voice in a multi-voiced spot, let's say a :60. Do you still charge for a full :60 read? Or, do you go by word count/time on air?

I'm sure this will differ if you're voicing a character, so let's just say it's a "regular" person.

A :60 is a :60 is a :60... oh and so is a :30.

The minute you start breaking your rate down for words (in the commercial arena) you are heading down a dangerously slippery slope.

Yep. If you're in it, you're in it.

Interesting to note that my local petrol station has a special rate. If I fill my car so I can travel to an audition they don't charge, if it's for local radio petrol is 40p per litre, local TV 60p per litre, national TV £5 per litre.

Phillip,

I hadn't thought of it that way...

The problem I have is how do I charge when I don't leave the house? Cost per step?

dshetterly, et al;

O.K.; back to the subject of this thread. According to AFTRA, for broadcast rates you COULD charge a standard session fee + (depending upon the number of persons represented in the spot) a rate commensurate with the minimums.

Or, if you are doing a "tag" (under :11 seconds) the tag rate; or you could do what I personally suggest... charge the same as you would for a full broadcast commercial. It takes the same skills to do your "part" of the commercial as it will to do the rest of the commercial. We should get paid a rate based upon our ability to deliver a quality sound from our experience and talent, not based upon how many words or how much time is allowed us to showcase our talent in a commercial.

O.K., I will get off my soapbox now...

Toodles

so do you guys charge the same rate for a radio commercial regardless of length? :15, :30, :60... local, regional, national... the rate is the same? similar question for a TV spot.

The only differential I have is tags.
I charge the same for :30s and :60s.

Oh, I missed the second part of your question. Different sized markets have different prices....I got that idea from Banksey's gas station. Rolls Eyes

Yes, I charge the same rate... why complicate things?

My only change (other than tags, length of time used, or markets) is for :90 second commercials which is becoming the fashion these days.

Each VO Artist has their own way of determining their value. What may work for me may not work for you. You must determine your own value and how you wish to delineate the rate or fees based upon your market, your experience, your qualifications, your needs and desires. No one else can determine (or rather should determine) what and how you charge for your services.

Toodles

On rare occasion I've given a client a "twofer" on :15's, but it's always been in combination with other spots.

And a tag, young master Shetterly, in case you didn't know, is commonly defined as a line or two that revises the original copy of a commercial. If you do a commercial that reads "this movie opens October 3rd", and then you also record separate lines "this movie opens tomorrow" and "opens tonight", you should get paid for the original spot and the two variations. Going AFTRA rate for radio in many cities is something like $230 for the spot and $95 for each tag in small quantities. In non-union situations tag rate is often lower, maybe $30 to $75.

But to add to the chorus above, a spot is a spot, no matter how many voices. I've been paid full rate to do four or five words. Four or five brilliantly delivered words I might add, since that was all I had to do.
