My AT 2020 came as a freebie with the Mbox and it isn't bad. I keep it around in case my AT 4040 goes south. It sounds surprisingly good for a microphone that retails for around $99 (and cheaper on eBay).

AT makes great mics for under $500. I haven't tried a AT2020, but I'm sure it's a great value for the money like their other mics. CW, I'm curious, you and your AT4040 sound great - are you going straight into the MBox or are you running any other preamps? What else are you using to get that sound?

Bigjames,

I've got the PreSonus Inspire GT (the "GT" being tacked onto the version sold at Guitar Center), and am very happy with it. I purchased it at the same time that I picked up an AKG Perception 400, and the pair work great together. Admittedly there are times when I wish the Inspire had actual knobs to twiddle instead of the on-screen knobs, which can be a pain to twiddle with the mouse. On the plus side, though, the ability to save settings is very helpful.

Not sure if my GT version is any different from the non-GT, but mine came with Cubase LE and a bunch of effects/processing plugins. Haven't used them yet, though, mainly because of time. What little recording I've done so far has all been through Audacity on my MacBook, and there haven't been any issues so far.

My "chain" is the mic du jour into the Mbox with an Alesis NanoCompressor insert into the Mbox. After that, it's my larynx.

The rig is used for auditions and practice.
