Hey there,

VO veteran here. I'm in the process of re-doing my own personal website, www.tomtest.com , and I'm looking to find examples of "good" talent sites for inspiration. I know "good" is in the eye of the beholder, but in my mind, it means a site that is aesthetically appealing (but without compromising usability...), and one that allows a visitor to easily listen the talent's demos.

FYI, I like my current site in some ways, but I'm looking to add many more specialized VO demos, and since I do a lot of on-camera work, some video demos and a print portfolio.

I think Harlan Hogan has a terrific site (www.harlanhogan.com). Any others out there that you admire - and WHY? Your thoughts on this will help me re-imagine my site, and I thank you for sharing your time and expertise.

Just a thought Tom,

Opinions of personal websites are very subjective. So as not to offend, why not select some examples of overall good websites which are not related to our business....

I also suggest: it is not a good idea to steal someone else's ideas, One never knows what is copyrighted or trademarked these days...

Be creative and start your own trend...

Just a thought.

Why not take a look at the sites that belong to the folks here and see what you like and don't like?

As Frank said, it's a subjective business.
See what appeals to YOU and make your site about your contributions and taste.

Great idea! Why didn't I think of that? It must have been too obvious. That will be a great help.

Sure, I guess there isn't much that would distinguish a good website for any other creative talent or small business from a good VO site. Good web design is good web design, right? I'll do a google search to see if I can find websites devoted to examples of what to do (and what NOT to do).

Thanks for getting my brain cells firing, Frank!

from what i understand here is the formula:

1. have a microphone on every page (clip art if you can find it)
2. make sure audio starts as soon as the page is loaded - as loud as possible
3. do not, under any circumstances, allow the viewer to turn the audio off or down
4. try to make sure you have frames that require the viewer to scroll, not only up and down, but left & right as well
5. make sure several key links do not work - this creates a more adventurous experience for the viewer.

6. Include a page for rates on which you refuse to discuss your rates
7. Remember that experience and credits are a matter of opinion, if you
THINK you did it put it on your site.
8. People who visit your site are probably looking for a voice over and need
to hear how you sound so ensure that they have to jump through a number
of hoops to make it a voyage of discovery.
9. Work on your brand even though you and the people who tell you to work
on your brand have no idea what work on your brand means.
10. Your site is not a selling tool it's a statement about you artistically.

Todd, GREAT list! Thanks for the pointers! Since I've only accomplished one of your guidelines at my site, I know that I have a long way to go. Still, I'm willing to put forth the effort, and will do everything I can to comply.

In fact, I'm off to Google Images to search for some generic, predictable microphone images right now.

By the way, if you can send me the names and addresses of all of your clients, and anyone else you think I could send my demo to, I'd really appreciate the help! Thanks! Sticking out Tongue

Be sure to mix in ones you wish you'd done as well.
