My beloved AKG K141 Monitor phones have bitten the dust. I tried the K141 Studio version they replaced it with, but found it unpleasantly brittle and tinny. I'd like something with a good sound, that's comfortable to wear. Some of the closed sets just give too big a squeeze, which is great for eliminating mic bleed, but unpleasant on the head and ears

The website said the K141 Monitor was the most popular headset in studios. That must be why they discontinued them!!!???

Any recommends?

Hey Bill!
I have a set of Audio Technica ATH-M40fs which I love....they're about 6 years old, so I'm not even sure they still make them! But they're very comfy, and I like the sound.
I'm also looking at getting a pair of the "AKG K171 Studio" which I used at a studio in the City & fell in love with as well!

Happy hunting!

Liz

I love my Sony MDR-V300s. Some of the best sound I've heard in any headphones in a very inexpensive package.

A bit expensive maybe, but the best sounding headphone VO-money can buy at the moment is the Sony MDR-7506 or the kick-ass MDR-7509. The latter can be worn for 8 hours in a row, and those cans never wear YOU... the very best closed headphones I ever tried. There is a consumer/dj version called the V-900. That comes in grey/champagne colour, the 7506 and 7509 are black. The picture shows the 7509... and what makes this a fine choice... if you break any part of it, it can be ordered as spares from Sony Professional... you can also fold it up so the 'ears' rest within the space of the headband and then comfortably put it in the black leather pouch to carry it with you.

Headphone Type: Dynamic, closed
Driver Size: 50 mm
Magnet Type: Neodymium
Plug Type: Gold
Frequency Response: 5-30,000 Hz
Impedance: 24 ohms
Sensitivity: 107 dB/mW
Power Handling: 3000 mW
Cord Length: 9.8 ft
Weight: 10.6 oz

Yikes! Not even E-Bay has the old model. I know what you mean. I still use the ole tried and trusted KOSS which have also been discontinued. To me the thing about headphones is the relative way we grow accustomed to the sound. When my Koss Pro 4AA's would break, I'd change out the elements from one headphone to another for consistency. Now I use a lighter weight(also discontinued) Koss Pro/4XPlus which is much lighter.

The thing is, probably nothing will sound as good as your old set of AKG's. But, I'd grab a pair of those SONY's and make a new friend. Or, keep trying E-Bay or the internet until you find someone with a pair socked away in the basement.

Good luck! I feel your pain. Frown

Hi everybody. I've abused and dropped and kicked these:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_beyerdynamic_dt_770_pro80_closed_studio_headphones?full_sku=102512019

for well over two years and I cannot count the times I've been hunting for my cans all the while wearing them Sticking out Tongue

The padding inside the arch distributes the weight really comfortably. Also quite often I've almost jumped out of my skin to suddenly realize that my wife has been standing nearby talking at me without my noticing it.
I lock the door when I wear these.[/url]

I love my pair of MDR 7506's too. The first pair I bought lasted me 10 years before I finally decided to buy another set. I wear out the ear pads occasionally but they are easy enough to replace.

Thanks for all your input! I did find some in a dusty corner of the Internet through Amazon. If they don't actually materialize, you've given me some great suggestions.

Liz,

No. Though I have 3, but then I use one pair, my wife uses a second when she's editing and my oldest son Eric (hi Eric!) wears the third when he's editing.

Liz,

Yes. I guess my roots on the farm run strong, since I have (at times) pulled everyone in the family together for projects. (Especially a number of years ago when one of my services was cassette duplication, we'd have an assembly line working on the kitchen table as we put labels on tapes, put tapes in cases and put finished pieces in boxes for shipping.)
