Hi all,
The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know, profound ain't it?
Since I don't live on or near either coast or in Chicago, I'm a fer' piece from any live, hands-on VO Training.
For personal reasons, I have neither the time nor resources to travel to far-flung seminars, workshops or conventions, but I can and do enjoy them vicariously thru you guys.
Books, CDs and teleclasses are great, but some of us learn better from human contact. Besides, a coach after being with me for a bit might say: "what the hell were you thinking?". That would be good info, as well.
I don't discount the methods above, I've read Alberger's and Saulsberry's books and had CDs from Julie Williams. I don't have experience with telecourses.
Can anyone suggest a consentrated week-end VO 101 course within reasonable driving distance from central Kentucky? Or a personal coach.
Or the most efficient and cost-effective way of getting a good start.
So far, this board has been one of my most valuable resources and I prize everyone's opinions and advice.
Thanks,
-Roger

Hi Roger,
Fellow Kentuckian(from Lexington originally) here. In fact my first two radio jobs out of college were in Nicholasville. (WNVL and WCGW) back in the mid-80s...
as for training, it depends on what your budget is...most VO coaches will do tele-training for anywhere between $75-$150 per session.
If you want something in person within driving distance, you might want to check out Susan Andre, who works out of Columbus, or there's a guy named Rocco Del Vera who is a theater guy at the University of Cincinnati but also trains VO people.
If you google either of them you should get their contact information.
Hope that helps! Smile

Hey Rob,
Thanks for the response. I'll check these people out. I'd say "how 'bout them Cats", but my heart's not in it.

Oh yeah, Nancy Wolfson with Braintracks Audio is also very good (she's in L.A. so it's stricly tele-seminars). She charges around $130 per session.
If you decide to work with her and mention my name, she'll give me a complimentary session Smile ..that's not why I mention her, I really believe she is one of the best VO coaches out there today. I am currently working with her on skills and re-vamping my demo.

Roger,

I second the Nancy Wolfson recommendation. Well worth the money. In fact, I told her after our last session that I don't think I'm paying her enough. She hasn't raised her rates, though.

And if you do decide to study with her, mention Rob's name. Not mine. (I already have a couple of free lessons in the bank.)

Always the gentleman, Bob. Thanks for your valuable input.
I see you as the wise and kind adopted uncle of this bunch, always being positive, helpful and uplifting for everyone and how-come you don't coach, big guy? I know you're way to busy, but you ought to consider it for later on maybe.
You're opinion is highly regarded. Souer Power!

Roger,

You are much too kind. As for the coaching thing, let's just say I love doing voiceovers too much to take the time away from them to coach. Maybe someday later. Meanwhile, here and there I look for opportunities to provide some guidance and help, at no charge, to those I wish to and can help. I regard this as a moral obligation, since there have been so many who have done great kindnesses to me along the way.
