My wife says:

If it happens in Vegas...you stay in Vegas. Shocked

Hi Heather. I've been a lurker here for a while, but thought this would be a nice way to get involved in this busy forum.
I guess I am different than most here as I am a studio technician who specializes in studio installation for VO actors. I hope I don't get flamed for sneaking in a plug here and there!
First, I can tell you that $2500 just the computer alone is MUCH more than you need. I've setup plenty of VO recording systems with computers well under $1000, including laptops.
Second, the Mic and Mic Preamp are by far the most important part of the signal chain. You can spend $100 or $1000 or more on the mic, but I recommend the Rode NT1 or the Neumann TLM-103, if you have the scratch. If you are doing promo work for Hollywood, the Sennheiser 416 is surprisingly ubiquitous. For a Mic preamp, I can recommend the Presonus Eureka, or the dbx 286A (CHEAP!), which one successful client of mine is using daily with his 416.
If you only need to record, then Audacity really can't be beat. Get the audio into the computer with an Echo Mia PCI card, if it is a desktop computer, or a USB interface like M-Audio Fasttrack or the Lexicon Omega.
Want to be able to connect real-time to studios like the ISDN technology can, but can't justify the expense? Get Source Elements "Source-connect" for $400, and bridge to ISDN with outofhear.com (yes, one of my clients).
Feel free to contact me anytime for more info...

Thanks to all whom gave sage, or staged advise! I can clearly see I am in good company with you all! I knew that the info. was somewhere in this big square box blinking at me. I'll look at the archives!
