Nah, I didn't take it as such, no worries. If I did the answer would have been more along the lines of... why do I have this kind of gear? Because I can!
Normally I use three mics, which all fit different needs. U87, RE-27, CMV-563 (replaced by the Horch). Depending on the copy and character asked for (not to mention the medium...) I use one of those three.
The rest are for other people to record with, not me. This is why I'm building my own private VO area in my house. I got tired of getting kicked out by people who were paying me.
Your point is a valid one (the RE-20 became the staple of broadcasting because of it's ability to cut through the crappy processing indicative of radio broadcasts), it just doesn't relate to my current situation, hence the response.

Bill,
I appreciate you taking the time to share your opinion. Sure, in many cases a guy with a SM58 hooked into a Soundblaster 16 can get a gig. But that's not my market or my competition.
I'm always trying to improve myself as well as my gear. And I make enough to have the luxury of upgrading gear, so I'm exploring options I guess.
I asked for opinions, so I take it yours is I should stick with what I've got.

And by the same token. A crappy voice still sounds crappy no matter how much money you have invested in gear,
I had a long chat with Frank F about this and he very confidently proclaimed that he could make a $50 wal-mart mic sound as good as a $1000 pro mike.
And listening to him, I believe him.

Here's a reference point that is worth considering:
Corey Burton... pretty much top of the game, right?
He uses an old ribbon mic (not a 77-DX or 44-DX, but a lesser known and much cheaper mic) and a Presonus Blue Tube USB.
While I love being a gearslut, I'll wholeheartedly stand behind Bill's comment that it's not about the gear. While good gear (which is not the same as expensive gear, though the two do sometimes go hand in hand) will capture a better sound, if you don't have the goods, you could be using a 100K mic and still sound terrible. At the end of a session, I'd rather record an awesome VA with el cheapo gear than have the best gear with a sub-standard talent.
I see Jeff made the same point while I was posting this up

If it sounds good to you, yes.
Your mic and pre combo is network quality.
The interface just converts analog to digital. No magic there.
Compare the specs of several kinds of interfaces/sound cards.
Lynx seems to be real popular in recording studios.
