Love my Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro. Got it off E-Bay for $120. Bill C. is right about the Yamahas. Great mixers. But the newer Yamaha models have top Ins and Outs instead of in the back.
About your computer. Look first at the back of the computer and see if you have any small female audio jacks (the small size of stereo headphones you plug into your walkman or iPod) that are red, blue, green and sometimes black. Sometimes a motherboard will have a sound cards built in and all you need to make it work are drivers from the company that made the computer or the motherboard. |

This is the same computer I've been using for the last year. Since its only a computer used for recording, I've never worried much about it. There are the red/green/purple plugs on the back- so I obviously have a soundcard. However, if I plug my speakers into the computer, I hear nothing. I can only hear audio played through pro tools, nothing through the internet, etc.
Is there a program or something I need to make the card work??
And Diane, size doesn't matter... _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Kara and Chuck (and Liz),
Thanks for the update. As for mixers, I've used the Yamaha MG10/2 and MG12/4. They are both pretty quiet.

Kara,
Here is the deal, with you MBox you really do not need a mixer. However, if you choose to add new tools and toys (the Phone Patch, etc.) you may need one. The MBox IS your mixer - until you run out of inputs.
I also suggest it is not the Focusrite which is causing your "hum" rather I would check all connections; including POWER cords, Firewire, and cables.
You may need to replace or move cables to find the culprit.
Next, you may be able to enable the on-board sound card, although this takes a bit of work - the on-board sound card is most likely "simplex" (walkie-talkie style I/O's). You WILL need a duplex audio card for recording if that is the way you choose to go. However, an OEM sound card will NOT work with ProTools.
You may need to buy something similar to a Sound Blaster or a cheap USB type card if you choose to use Skype or some other VOIP style programs which are available for communication via the internet.
The Lawson is a great mic... enjoy.
Frank F
P.S.: There are loads and loads of great mixers available for less than $500.00. Your mission, should you decide to accept is: to determine which has the right sound color for your voice and is the right price for your pocketbook.
This post will self destruct in five seconds... if it hasn't already. _________________ Be thankful for the bad things in life. They opened your eyes to the good things you weren't paying attention to before. email: thevoice@usa.com

Kara,
All excellent suggestions. If you want long term, trouble free, Radio like quality, have one of your Radio engineer friends hook you up with one of these listed below.
They may be the easiest to expand into future needs and feel just like being on the Radio or in your station production room (with cue, mic mute, built-in mix-minus, monitor switches, etc...).
Just another thought.

P.S. I am really excited about your new mic. Let us hear all about it when you settle in with it. Thanks. |

are the speakers and board hooked up at the same time and to the same card? (either right click the little speaker in the system tray, or go through your control panel.)
check the audio properties. you want your "playback preferred device" to be the card your speakers are hooked up to.
some computers not only have a speaker jack, but also a line out jack. there's usually a little icon etched into the metal or on a sticker showing you which is which.
if you only have one output jack, you can always buy a y-splitter at radio shack and run one to the speakers and one to the board. _________________ Jim Feldman

Keep in mind, Kara, that you may get your speakers to playback windows sounds, but only your mBox will playback audio from ProTools (unless you have your audio out from the mBox into the adio in on your PC soundcard).

I know when I got the M-box the tech support guys told me I would only be able to hear through Pro tools. I have other computers- so it hasn't been an issue...but if I want a phone patch I have to reconfigure.
I checked the control panel audio section and MBox is my only option for playback.
The radio chic in me wants a mixer- I like buttons. The voice chic in me wants someone else to come to my house and fix it all Seriously, I really appreciate all of your help!
Frank F, the audio savior, is gonna help me once this wretched storm blows over and my dog has stopped howling.... _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Kara,
I'm not a super genius about computers, but I've been building my own systems for about 10 years and have a network of 6 computers I manage here at my house. I'd be glad to help you out. _________________ Be well,

Careful Bob, I'm likely to take you up on that! (BTW- I make great blackberry cobbler for all those that enter the Suchan residence!)
Also, a BIG thanks to Frank for the tech pep talk today!
I'll be sure to let you guys know when the new mic gets here and I'll record a little 'test run' for ya! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Also subject to interference from certain frequencies such as with wireless devices, which is why we don't use them in certain environments.
M-Box: we had issues with the preamps. I like what the BLA mod does with them though.
Personal opinion? Onyx 1220 running into an M-Audio or preferrably a Lynx sound card (the FW interface with the Onyx mixers isn't that great IME, though it's fixable if you can modify the drivers... knowledge of Assembly is a prereq for that though). Since you're using protools though, I'd say to run the Onyx into a BLA modded M-Box (or really, just use the modded M-Box) and you should be set. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

When you say BLA, are you speaking of Black Lion Audio? |
