So here's the deal: I managed to obtain a used Telos One phone hybrid. I'm trying to use with with my sparkly new 1202 VLZ3. I can get audio out of the Mackie into the Telos and vice versa but...how does one go about HEARING the caller (director) without RECORDING him/her? I read the Dave Diamond tutorial but it's incomplete. Anyone have a similiar setup or thoughts? Thanks.

Chris

Chris,

The trick is to use the AUX sends to get the audio from the phone patch, rather than routing it through the main part of the mixer. Liz has created a diagram specific to her mixer that might give you some insights into how to do this.

Check out Liz's info here: http://www.hireliz.com/phonepatchconfig.html

I hope that helps.

Bob,

That works GREAT...and is certainly very usable. Thanks. That Liz is SO cool! However, I was trying to find a way to completely eliminate the caller's voice from the recording without having to separate the sides. I do it all the time at my "job" studio...but, then, I use a 3-bus mixer there and the caller is simply routed to the audition side of the board while I monitor BOTH program (me) and audition (caller) and only record program (me). I was just thinking there must be a way to do this with the Mackie without having to use an additional headphone amp. Thanks for your help, though. I can certainly use Liz's schematic.[/i]

Chris,

Your Mackie board has the ability to route AUX audio to your headphones while leaving it out of the program mix. You don't need a separate headphone amp.

If you're still looking for a workaround for this, here's what I do with my Mackie LM-3204.

First off...you'll be feeding your recorder (PC) with the Alt 3-4 bus of your Mackie...that's engaged when you depress the alt 3-4/mute button on each channel. You'll find the output of this bus near the aux out's on the top panel near the main out's

Mic channel - with alt 3-4 engaged (to feed voice to the pc) run a short patch cable from the insert jack on the mic channel to the input of the next available channel. Since Alt 3-4 disables the aux sends on your mic channel..you're using the second channel as a send to your Telos and a listen level in your headphones.

Run the output of aux 1 to the input of your Telos (caller hears you this way)
Run the output of the Telos to another channel.

Operation:

Mic channel is potted up and in alt-3-4 and feeding PC

Second channel that you bridged to is potted up for your "listen level" in the main mix. and aux is up to feed caller. (Alt 3-4 NOT engaged)

Telos channel potted up so that you can here caller in main mix. (Alt 3-4 NOT engaged)

A little complicated...but works well here!

If you want some help setting this up just PM me and we can hook up on the phone...I'll walk you through it.

Chuck,

Thanks. I'll also try that approach when I get a moment. Apparently there ARE numerous ways to skin a cat.
