Steve,

I can't speak for Greg and I bow to his experience and knowledge, but I hear things differently on them from the HR828's. Not really better or worse, just differently. I find both helpful.

No reason to ever bow to anyone's technical experience when it comes to what they use in their studio. At most of our levels, it's just using a different brush for the painting.

That said, I'd considered the Mackies at one point. The 8" speakers are great, not much of a fan of the 6" models though (quality issues IME). I preferred the Dynaudio and Barefoot made monitors.

Rock solid and nice sound. Then again, they're about twice the price (or more in the case of the Barefoot monitors, which easily surpass the $5K pricetag). For the price tag though, most will be well-served with Mackies... just test them well before you buy, especially with the 6" models.

That said, the DM-20s are *goes to check Froogle* $225 or so. at less than 1/3 the cost of the 6" Mackie it's worth checking out if you need a low cost solution.

Would I take them over the Adam, Dynaudio, Barefoot, or even Mackie line of studio monitors? Nope. But if you're just starting out and need a good set of monitors until you build up your studio, the Roland series will do just ducky.

Thanks guys... I like the sound of the HR828s but the studio I was in just unpacked them so they weren't set up in a properly treated room.

I'm going to look into the Roland monitors, I'm in the market for some referencing monitors.

Thanks again gentlemen,
Steve
