I have a Dell 17" laptop and my battery life is about 3 hours.....love it by the way, do my recording on it as well, just like Bobbin...but yeah...it is a bit of a pain to lug around....weighs in at about 7 lbs....but I love the big screen for editing.

OK, I took Frank's suggestion, and found the following .pdf document from the extensive University of Illinois website (U of I, BTW, the home of the original Netscape/Mozilla/FireFox web browsing architecture) on their suggestions for student laptops...which parallels much of what's been mentioned here.

LAPTOPS

Anyone see anything wrong with THIS offer:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11210967&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&N=4017753&Mo=7&pos=5&No=5&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=29722&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&Sp=C&ec=&topnav=

Thanks again!

The Costco Toshiba isn't bad, just one thing bothers me... and you may deal with it as you wish...
Quote:
"Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium", this is quoted from the Costco site

I would suggest getting XP Pro rather than Vista. I would not buy Vista (personal preferences) until a few "bugs" are worked out of the program, such as drivers which support current hardware, support of ALL the programs one might want to use, etc.

O.K., I mentioned this was my personal preferences, not an edict. Everyone has their opinion, and I have mine.

Notice, the U of I document said they do NOT encourage/suggest/(sometimes) support using Macs... and Win XP is preferred over Vista. (No wars here... I am quoting from the document from the U of I ).

Toodles

Well if you're using the laptop for recording, just keep in mind that personal preference aside, much audio hardware / software out there hasn't been updated for Vista yet.

A lot of the firewire devices won't work under Vista yet and some software won't either. I think somebody posted something a month or two ago about how his/her brand new USB mic wouldn't work under Vista yet.

These manufacturers / developers need to get on the ball with this stuff...Vista's been available to developers for so long, there's really no excuse. But whaddya gonna do...

As a computer support person, I echo XP Pro over Vista!

We do not support Visto on campus yet and probably won't until after the first service pack.

The Toshiba looks like a nice device. 5.7 lbs isn't bad either.

Speaking of Costco, I just got a 19" LED monitor from them for $139.99 after rebate. It's great for the price.

I'd say get her the smaller size laptop and if and when she needs a bigger screen, you'll probably find an inexpensive monitor she can hook the laptop up to when she's in her room.

I love Costco's very liberal return policy. You can return stuff for even months after the purchase sometimes. I've bought 3 laptops at Costco. One of them was a bummer and we returned / exchanged it without a problem. Great people over there.

Most recording applications and drivers do not work on 64-bit systems as of yet. For this reason I'm against Vista for DAW use, and even XP-64 (although it does have much better support for 32-bit applications than Vista does).

Due to heat issues, I'm also warning folks against the quad core processors ATM. I'm going to be playing with one in the near future but until I hear better stuff coming out of forums like SPCR and the like, I'm very wary of using them for systems where silence is a necessity.

Doc,

She'll be a Modern Dance Major in the college of Fine Arts, with a minor in English.

My guess is, she'll be using a word processor and an internet browser more than anything.

Oh, and of course to watch "I Love Lucy" re-runs on her DVD.

Uh oh! Sounds (and looks) like she may need a media player upgrade. Maybe even video inputs with S audio jacks. Some model lines include that as a package upgrade.
OH....to be young.
