Question to those who use portable PCs for recording...

Does anybody have experience with trying to use a PC with a Celeron processor for recording, as opposed to a Pentium 4 or other? Or have you ever heard from anybody else that has tried it?

Vance,

Of course I've heard of it... even done it a few times, although I use a Pentium processor.

Are you having a problem with Celeron?

If the processor speed is high enough, it should be OK, but I can see where the lack of sufficient onboard cache could be detrimental to anything that requires some processing power.

You have anything more specific to add to your question?

Just considering getting a laptop for primarily voice work, and can't help but notice how much cheaper the Celeron-powered PCs are as compared to P4s.

(Don't start talking about Macs, please. No way, no how.)

Careful of implied invective, please.

Whoops! Sorry about that, Chief. No invective was intended. My wrist is stinging...

There are things you can do, if indeed it is for

primarily voice work
to make it less strenuous on the system.
What operating system do you plan to use? XP? Vista?

Probably XP. I tend to be a little slow jumping on new operating systems...like to give them some time to shake out those nasty little bugs.

OK... I had to set up a temporary studio and only had one of my wife's older Dells to plug in to test. It wouldn't work worth a hoot! I follow some recommended proceedure to deactivate all the superfluous things operating behind the scenes on that computer and it now works so good, it use it for the main recording unit in that studio.
When you get closer to setting it up, let us know and I'll post a list of the things to turn off.

I've been using a laptop PC for recording almost 3 years now. I started with a 2004 Dell, but it only had 18 GB. I just moved into a Toshiba Satellite running a dual core processor and 120GB hard drive and Win XP. It is definirely faster, more reliable and quiet. A must have for audio processing is at least 1G D-ram. I also set my Virtual memory real high. Because of the enormous space taken on the hard drive, I migrate files to an external hard drive about every 2 weeks.

I like the laptop because I travel a bit, and like to take it, and my mic with me.
