I have a client that managed to oversqueeze too much text into a 30 second spot. How much do you charge to re-record the spot after they've trimmed it? I know Amy charges 50% of the recording fee which seems fair. Just wondering what the rest of you do. _________________ Jeff

I'm on the 50% plan. Depends on the client of course too.
With certain high volume clients I'll do n/c fix-ups on a goodwill basis.
That said..there is a theshold. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

My pickups are usually 40%-60% depending on how bad it is.
Other times I just recharge the whole fee. |

Jeffrey,
In most cases for union work, there is no discounted revision fee for re-recording a commercial. It's the whole boat all over again. That said, I'm with Chuck as far as steady, and steadily paying clients. I won't hesitate to throw something like that in at no charge.
Now for a non-broadcast job, that's a different story. There is a revision fee for union work and I track pretty close to that. _________________ Be well,

Or... you could use Script Buddy and get the right amount of copy every time. Oh excuse me, did I drop something? _________________ David |

So does that mean the VO rate +studio fee...or just the studio (a.k.a "recording" fee)? And are you talking a recut of the entire script? Meh. I charge my hourly studio fee (vo, edit, post). _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Overwritten copy gets a premium charge from the get-go here at Camp Cooper.
I am sick to death of it and would rather pass up a spot than record 40 seconds of sh!t in a 30-second bag.
In other news, re-cuts of obviously overwritten copy are charged at 100% if I warned the client and they refused to listen.
Rewrites from intelligent clients get the 50% fee break. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Yeah, there's a possibility they'll want me to redo the whole thing because they'll remove some text. _________________ Jeff

It's a new session, new copy.
What do they expect? _________________ DBCooperVO.com

DB-Did I execute the quote thing correctly that time?
It's a new job. Why should you discount for their poor planning?
This uncomfortable situation can can be avoided many times if this is taken care of DURING recording session time, so the client/producer is present in some way. I've waited in the studio a good long time while all the rocket scientists pow-wow and completely rewrite their script, which can save on the additional session fee. _________________ Bobbin Beam

Agency guy says, "I don't understand it... when I read it it was 30 seconds!"
Then I say, "Sorry, but I'm at a disadvantage. I have to read it out loud."
In my opinion (which I have a great deal of respect for), a rewritten 40-seconds-of-copy-in-30-seconds spot is a new script and a new session. |

If a client wants a re-do free of charge I offer to do it at any studio they choose. All they need to do is book it and tell me where to be and when. If they don't object to paying I'll do it at mine.
You know my trouble? Far too reasonable! |

This is one of the problems of recording in a home studio without the client listening in. If they'd been in session with you they'd probably realize it was too long at the time, cut copy and have you re-read it on the spot for no additional charge. It's their problem if they don't want to listen in.
I will say, if copy is way out of line I usually call or write the client and they'll revise it or ask me to, and with a number of familiar clients I just go ahead and adjust the copy on my own and they seem to be happy.
