Chris-
I know we're beating a dead horse here but here is my take of broadcasting schools after 22 years in the radio biz. I, myself, went to a broadcasting school and lived to regret it. At the time I lost 5 grand and the only thing I took away from it was how to put an aircheck together. Something that I could have paid someone a couple hundred bucks to help me do and save myself alot of money. Now as an A I hire a small amount of broadcasting school students for jobs as part-time board ops at the stations I work for. Generally, when I interview broadcasting school students they are not nearly as sharp as those who are in traditional colleges getting their 4 year degree. Not that that matters much in your situation but all of that to say this.....save your money and see if you can latch on to a mentor who you can pay a little cash to show you the ropes of the area youre wanting to pursue. Trust me there are dozens of people who would take a few hours a month to train you on their own time...for a little cash. Then, take the rest of the cash and put it into VO seminars, recording workshops and coaching. Just make sure you get everything in writing and you feel good about the person who mentors you. Just my 2 cents because I had to learn the hard way. And if you have alot of debt...don't risk the financial security of you and your family's future. Just some advice from a guy who looked back and regretted a few things..... |

Just catching up on this post and wanted to offer my .02...
I spent my entire adult life on the radio (I'm now 30, I was on the air at 18 on a national show). How did I get the job? A guy in my in-line skating class (that I taught part-time) offered me an internship at his station. He taught me everything he knew...production, music scheduling, on-air performance, management, he even had me dealing with the record companies. After the internship I was immediately picked up by Radio Disney and was one of the first on-air personalities. I quit school when I realized I was learning more by 'doing' what I loved! School is great...debt is not. 7 months ago I resigned as co-host of one of the top rated morning shows in Charlotte, NC to pursue my dream to be a full-time voice actor. Now, I've been doing cartoons and commercials for 10 years, so this wasn't impulsive. I already had clients, and had already been building a studio. I didn't want to burden my husband with being our sole support. I also hope to start a family in the next year, and wanted this 'adventure' well on its way first.
Long story- but I wanted to show you that I do know 'a couple of things' (and only a couple!). Keep your day job. Offer your services as an intern or apprentice at a production facility on the weekends or in the evenings. Don't spend any more money on education. I don't know about your school, but our broadcasting school is taught by overnight dj's that can't get on the air in any other time slot. You learn best by 'doing', so pursue your dreams- but be patient. I waited 8 years to start my new career as a full-time voice actor. I am thankful I waited. Now- I can approach it as a business with much more 'life knowledge' than I had 8 years ago. You have time, so tread slowly
Good luck with acheiving all of your dreams. Someone smarter than me said 'this is a game of chess, not checkers'. Play slow, play smart. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Hey Chris - you live in a wonderful town and in that wonderful town, you have a pretty danged good radio station and it is run by a real good guy.
Go talk to Mike Flynn and see if there might be some way he can find something for you on a Saturday or Sunday. I know that when I was in radio, I was always hoping someone would pick up a Saturday shift for me once in a while. That's when I was young and single and Mike was young and single and....well....a couple of young guys, fast cars and......all the rest of that kinda stuff So you can see where a young fella might need someone to work for him on a Saturday!
Like many others, I went to a broadcast school - and classes were in one of the top rated radio stations in Detroit and the program director of the station was our instructor - all in all, it was well worthwhile. I learned a lot and I learned it from a real pro. But - I learned more in my first few weeks on the air at WCSR than I did in a year going to school. |

This has been quite the enlightening thread. One of those schools just opened up in my town and I went to the open house. About ten people showed up.
