I'll second, third and fourth what everyone else has said already. Don't throw that money away Chris. I dumped my fulltime radio job 7 years ago after 15 fulltime years, and it was the best thing for me. I only wish I had done it sooner. Now-a-days, what little "radio" I do is mostly production for a local station and a weekend airsh1t...sorry, SHIFT, from time to time. |

If you want to PRODUCE radio and tv audio, radio is not a bad way to learn.
I run a PRODUCTION HOUSE based on what I leaned in 25 years of radio.
However, I would not reccomend a broadcast school.
Buy a copy of Adobe Audition and learn how to use it. I do VO, too, but make
substantially higher fees PRODUCING spots than I do for the vo portion.
If you want to be a radio announcer or dj, first get a job at your local News/Talk station running the control board or call screening. They hire
rookies for those jobs. Then you can learn and move up. Get paid to learn! |

Wow! Wow, wow, wow, wow, Freakin' wow! I'm absolutely amazed at the amount of replies I've gotten on this, and I appreciate every one of them. No, I haven't signed anything yet. I am looking at this towards more of the production side of the house. I have several ideas swimming around in my head along with VO. The problem with my ideas is that right now, I don't have the 10K cash in hand to do them! If I did, this broadcast school idea wouldn't even be a thought. I'd just buy all the stuff I need and go from there.
There are three things, specifically, that I want to do. VO is the first one, Music and commercial production is the second, and the third is that I want to start up a record label. I have wanted these three things since my Navy days. Idiot me, however, went into Psychology because I was trying to appease my folks when they said "You need a college education if you want to make money." Well, okay, fine. I've got the degree and I'm still not making hardly any money.
Anyway, I digress. I want to entertain people. I want to brighten this world a little bit. I still haven't decided what I'm going to do. Maybe I might do this broadcast school, so I can get the programs and the production experience (yeah, I know, 10K is a car, but hey, I'm already somewhere in the vacinity of 50K in debt with student loans, what's another 10?). Besides, I'm 32, I'm in a job currently that I hate, I have a baby on the way, and I need to do something that will make me happy. This (VO/music/comedy/production) will make me happy!
Thank you all for the thoughts, keep em coming!
Your pal,
Chris _________________ Christopher G. French

Just want to throw in my .02 regarding your comment about wanting to start a record label.
A family member of mine is a VP at a major record label (one of the biggest). He has said that the "writing is on the wall" in terms of the future of record labels, being that they likely won't exist in any type of capacity in the mid-term future due to the accessibility of pro-level equipment, know-how, viral marketing, downloadable content...the list goes on.

Chris,
I can't vouch for the courses, but the school is one of the best, and they offer courses on-line in music production and the music business. It may be worth investigating further.

Chris ... SO glad to see you back ... I had hoped our (constructive?) criticism had not run you off completely. Glad it didn't. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Even while in broadcasting, (this was in the '70's) we didn't see much quality talent coming from broadcasting school at the time. In fact it was somewhat of a red flag at the time for program directors. It was more like, "Put that tape at the bottom of the pile". _________________ Bobbin Beam

Chris... Make up your mind about one specific trade or idea that you want to excell in. When you accomplish that... the other ideas may not seem as important.

| You and your job... welcome to the real world. Most of us have jobs we hate.
And I am reading way too much about "something to make me happy". Raising a family is not about me... it's about us. _________________ "Bailey"

Well stated Bailey.
Chris, you perception seems to be a bit naive. I don't mean this in a rude way. Just stating that some of your words seem they are from a person much younger than yourself. You have a family. They come first. Now unless your S.O. can support said family while you try to find which path(s) you want to focus on, it seems unfair to make such a sacrifice based on it making YOU happy. I hope I'm not out of line with this. You've had a few pages worth of pros sing the same song about this broadcasting school...with not much of it hitting home. If VO is the goal, then acting/VO workshops is where you money is much better spent. But a focused goal should be made. Broadcasting school for one road, workshop for another, acting classes.. and so on... is fine if there are no other priorities.
True, 32 is young, but it isn't 16. Hell, I'm 27 and I feel behind schedule! But, you are an adult and will make whatever decisions you want. Just be wary of who, other than yourself, is sacrificing. _________________ Donovan

Chris... A lot has been said about this Broadcasting School subject. I hope that you understand that most, if not all, of the people on this board are genuinely concerned about each other. I also feel that if they didn't care, they would just tell you to follow that 10K path... and sink or swim. You're 32, and Donovan is 27... Yikes... those combined ages equal me! That doesn't make me the smartest person in the world, but I have seen a few more sunrises than you guys have. I've only been into VO for about 4 years. Am I where I'd like to be?... no. Will I eventually be where I want to be?... probably not. But it's better to be in the race, than to be watching from the sidelines. Always keep the dream alive, but remember that reality is real and now. If I were 32 or 27... knowing what I know now... I would try to learn as much as I could about this VO profession, without putting a strain on the family. You've got time on your side, right now. Use that time wisely. Time waits for no one. I'm 59... yesterday I was 18.
(I'll step down off my box now.)

Chris,
The one thing in life that is certain is you have to be true to yourself.
We all have dreams some realistic some we may never be able to attain, but
it does not mean we shouldn't dream.
I know you never want to go through life looking back and saying what if.
If you really have a passion follow it you are the only one who knows what you want and what you are capable of.
I also think you should heed the advice of many of the VO-BB sages they have been there and done that and have survived the pitfalls and now want to save you from them.
Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck and please keep us advised as to how your career is progessing. _________________ A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. |

When you follow your bliss... doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors, and where there wouldn't be a door for anyone else.
