So my wife wants us to get a DVD burner for putting pictures and videos of the baby onto discs to send to the grandparents. Plus I figure it's a decent way to back up all my audio projects.
I'm scanning newegg and realize I have no idea what I'm looking for. The prices just seem way too low. Anybody got any tips or suggested reading about DVD burners?
Thanks. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Brian,
The last 2 DVD burners I've purchased have been external units (USB 2.0) for 2 reasons:
1. So, when I upgrade my workstation and/or office computers again I won't have to buy another DVD drive, I just move these over.
2. So that I can put the computer over on the other side of the room and just have the DVD drive (silent except when in use) on the desk next to me. Keeps things quieter here in my little corner of the world.
I don't have a brand recommendation. I've not had a clunker among the various internal and external units I've purchased from LiteOn, CompUSA, and other "generic" brands. _________________ Be well,

I'm a believer in LaCie externals for everything. I have a LaCie burner. Firewire and USB. $130 is hard to beat for excellence. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Brian,
Burners have really gotten cheap. If you are going with an internal model, the Lite-On that Bob mentioned work very well. When I was at Microsoft there was a hardware guru who swore by them and I've used them ever since. I used to buy Plextor but I kept burning them up. |

I've had good luck with La Cie, NEC, and Lite-On products.
However... I decided to take a bit of one, merge with the other and do something really nice for travel (sometimes I want two burners with my laptop). I grabbed a nice NEC +/- burner with all the trimmings (dual layer, etc.) for about $40 on sale. It was a thin model, aka one you use in a laptop.
No problema, I spend an extra $15 for an external case to hold it (with a USB 2.0 interface) and voila'... a ridiculously small and light package with a kick-a$$ burner for my data storage needs.
I like it so much, I use it in place of the one that came with my Alienware lappy. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I'll second the recommedation for Lite-on. But given the relatively light use you'll be treating it to (you aren't a replicator), almost any brand should suffice.
I went super-generic for mine and bought an "Emprex" at our local Fry's Electronics for $40. Opened it up and it was actually a Sony that retails for double what I paid.

I've got a Sony as well. I archive all my audio and photos plus some other important things on DVD-R's. Never had a problem with it. |

I did almost the same thing as Yoda - 'cept I went with a full size NEC and pulled the fan out of the case. Now it sits right in front of me - connected to the computer outside the studio. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I travel a lot to cons and such, so I needed something small and light.
It does the trick, and then some...
But again, I remind everyone that I am a bit of a bats%#t paranoid, which is why I got the thing in the first place. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I have an NEC in one computer and an LG in another. Newegg.com has great deals on these sorts of things.
Also, when making a master (or even copies) burn at the slowest speed possible. I use Nero 6.0 and burn at 8X sometimes 16. |
