I was contacted by a good friend that runs a church called "BOX" out of a large theater every weekend. It's a very contemporary church and they do things....for lack of a better term.....on the cutting edge. Anyway, he contacted me to produce something for a radio spot that would peak some interest in his Easter production called "Thousand Words". Darrin Hoover is his name and he is a great friend and one of the most talented individuals I have ever met.

Anyway, he does the entire production acting out characters all the while painting a huge work of art during all of this. He also brings out many other works that he pre-produced while acting out the characters on the canvas. It is pretty amazing to say the least. The audio of him in this piece was from the 2006 production. This year should be even better than before from what I hear.

So....here is the "trailer" I voiced and produced for him. Just thought I would share:

Ben,

Really well done. Good work. And I'm sure a riveting presentation in person.

Good work Ben. I really like your read. It works perfectly with the production.

Awesome work, Ben! As others have said, your read is a perfect match for the material.

The production values were good but this is ultimately a story of how in Christianity salvation was secured in eternity for humanity. I heard horror, nightmare, rage, anger and no hope or optimism. growl like a Rottwieller by all means as long as I know you're wagging your tail.

I totally agree, Philip, and although this may sound contradictory, that's exactly why I think Ben's delivery works. While the underlying story is a tail-wagger, the way the BOX guy is choosing to present it feels more Rottweiler-aggressive. That style of presentation for that particular story may not sit right with some (myself included), but that's what Ben had to work with. That's why I felt his choice in vocal delivery was an appropriate match.

Very valid point Philip. I will never argue with one of the masters of the craft, such as yourself.

I would say though....If you would have the chance to see the production, you would know how intense it is. If I painted the story (in the allotted minute) as tail wagger.....some may get the wrong idea and bring the kids and grandma, whom might otherwise expect a "choir and chirping birds story". This production is meant to move people emotionally and it is done in a such a way the drama is very, very intense. It depicts from the "Garden of Eden" to the "Cross"...in somewhat abbreviated fashion....up to the "Passion" part of the Easter Story. "It is finished" are the very last words of the production. So no depiction of the stone rolling away in this one. This is just how he choses to do the production. And as a one man play, while painting a masterpiece of art......there is none better than him IMHO.

If my growling offended anyone.....my deepest apologies to you. Smile

No implication of your way being the wrong way, we're playing with subtleties here. If I gave you "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury" as the opening line and then left you with the rest of the copy unchanged how would your read differ? This is probably one of those cases where in the hands of the right director with this piece you could really fly.

Banksey's comments remind me of a thread of the past asking if one would turn down work, and why? Does the content matter? Hell, I'd do a political for Dubya (and charge him out the a*s) if I figured it was a good fit for my work. And I presume that Ben's approach to it was dead-on and what the dude wanted. I like dogs, too.

Ben, you rule. I'm one of your biggest fans.

Having read Ben's original post I realised my error. He posted something so that others here could have a listen. He didn't ask for feedback, critique or for it to be used as a basis for a coaching session. I was obviously having a DUH moment.

In my opinion, the read was terrific and I believe the tone and tenor of the read tells us without words what we need to know. It tells us this ain't no lightearted kiddie show. This is a dramatization of something so profound that mere mortals can not fully grasp it. That's what the read tells us - the words themselves tell us that the man on stage is there to help those who attend come to an appreciation of what is offered them and what was given in return.
