I have yet to enroll in V123 as a "premium" member but as far as competition goes, I would think that my best competition is me! How am I doing versus the last time I submitted? Am I better or do I still suck as much as I did yesterday. That's really the only competition that matters, n'est pas? _________________ Joe Rodriguez, Bilingual Voice Actor | The Voiceover Thespian Blog |

Relatively new to these boards as I am, I'm retiscent to hold forth yet. (But soon you won't be able to shut me up...)
Still, as a V123 Preemie Baby, I have to say that 1 in 400 is way out of line. After 18 months, I'm scoring about 1 in 40 when being selective with my auds; and 1 in 100 when I'm on an audition binge.
But math does have a place in weighing the flea markets...4000 voices; 80 postings per week, Maybe 40 are genuine. So, if you're in the top 10% of talents, you land 1 job every 10 weeks. At an average of $150 per, you're still eating Alpo and skipping on the rent.
The voice sites are like gymnasiums: for practice and enjoyment.
Nobody makes a living on them.
But at 1 in 400, you may as well flex those abs in your living room. I mean, why pay the gym fees? |

Funny you should say that, but I know someone who makes most of her VO money from V123 gigs. Granted they are almost all private leads, but she says 80-90% of her work comes from there and she doesn't have to work a "real job". I guess it all depends on your demand.
So far I've done about 50 auditions from V123 and have had one private lead followup. It was for a spot that I just couldn't pull off in the allotted time. In retrospect I should have done the read and worried about doing a timed read if I got the gig, but live and learn. |

Your friend is a very very lucky and very, very talented voicer, Rich.
I meant to refer specifically, however, to answering Public Leads with Custom Demos.
My basic math also didn't include repeat business,
The voice bazaars can be mightily useful in building up a clientel. But they're hard to find in all that dross.

Since I'm new to this area of the business I'm wondering what you all think about the sites that do charge a fee to sign up? I've gotten a couple of jobs in the Boston area through sending my demo CD to local producers. I'm in the process of setting up my home studio which will allow access to other cities. I keep reading that many of you have agents. There are no agents who look for work for the performer in Boston. They work for the client. So I'm thinking besides the free sites which I've seen listed on this site that I should consider signing with one or two reliable sites.
any comments, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Do a search on any of their names. You'll find lots of posts and opinions. I paid up again this year at one site for two reasons. One, it's another avenue of advertising. Two, the private leads. If I do audition for the public leads it's pretty rare... for the reasons I started this topic with in the first place.
As my business is picking up pretty well I may join one or two more this year. Or I may put that money into targeted ads through google or on specific websites. I'm still revamping my marketing plan and trying to keep myself from blowing all my income on gear. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

It's too bad that auditions aren't tax deductible. If they were, this entire thread would never have been started... and I would still be a paying member of V123. _________________ "Bailey"
