So what you're saying, Chris, is that voiceover leads to sacks and sacks of money at the courthouse door. Ha. We've all been looking at the end of the driveway.

I want to steal that one too!

Just toss in the fact that it's a "padded" room (because, well, most booths are padded with foam)

One of Kara's acquaintances (I think, do you know Adam Sheehan?) asked me the question while walking through the Philadelphia Convention Center when one of the pre-recorded messages I'd been the talent for was playing.

I merely pointed to the speakers...

However, for most people... I'm in infosec

DW's translation: for those not in the focus group, infosec mean Information Security

LOL!

It's really hard not come back with something like, "Yeah, go ahead, I'm going into brain surgery. I know I can do that and I look so good in scrubs!"

Quick, get me my chocolate!

I get this 100% of the time followed by...lemme hear a voice...come on...just do one...

I answer with...you are hearing one right now! Unless it's a child, then I'll do any voice they want to hear Smile

Actually, Mr. Banks said that. The only way there would be sacks and sacks of money at the courthouse door is if you are an attorney.

When asked what I do for a living the next question is usually how well I'm doing, to which I reply, "I'm starving to death a lot more slowly than I expected."

I'll borrow some ideas here..... for rather complete response we can all give to the "what do you do" inquiry:

I am a Voice Talker.....I sit in a dark padded room, in my underwear and talk to myself all day......

Feel free to add on Sticking out Tongue Sticking out Tongue Sticking out Tongue Sticking out Tongue

It's sad. I love doing what I do, but I just don't have the patience to explain it every time I'm asked. So I'm apt to just start with "I'm self-employed" or "I'm a consultant of sorts" and hope they drop it. If they pursue it, I'll usually lean toward "I do narrations and voiceovers" and then hope they drop it. I used to just say I was a freelance engineer/producer, but lately that part of the work is much less frequent.

It's particularly cumbersome on the rare occasion I'm called with the occasional telephone survey and the "occupation" question comes up. Then of course there's the IRS form 1040...

Lately I've been thinking I should be a little less vague, though, on the off chance that I may be being introduced to a potential client. Smile

Everybody thinks he's a critic. I've always say I'm an actress. The next question usually is "What have I seen you in?" It impresses them when I say I was in Mystic Pizza with Julia Roberts. Never mind that I had two lines. The other response I get is "Oh that must be a fun hobby." Whatever. I'm going to be honest because I'm not ashamed of what I do.

cheers,

Chrissy

My mother, who is old enough to be my mother, is a professional stand-up comic. She likes to sleep when on a plane.

People often ask her what she does, and then pump her to tell them jokes. Or, worse, they start telling her jokes "Oh! I heard a funny one/just got one in my email-- you can use this in your act! Bla bla bla..."

One day, not long ago, the woman sitting next to her asked what she would be doing in Atlantic City. So my mom told her "I'm an entertainer."

"Oh! Do you sing?"

"No. I'm a stripper."

And then she was able to read awhile, then nap a bit while her seat mate spent the trip in stunned silence.

When people ask me what I do I tell them I'm a jockey. It is an uncommon job as it is, but the fact that I'm 6'10" helps sell it that much more.

I usualy just tell people that I do voice-overs for radio and TV commercials ect. All my clients are out of market so there's no place to head me near home. My radio gig's in Boston and the signal doesn't get to where I live since they moved the transmitter to improve the city-grade signal in downtown Boston.

My 18-year old has the best line though. "he sits in the basement and talks to himself all day". (now I just need to start rocking back and forth and I'll really have it down)
