Here is an interesting podcast from an equipment company spokesperson about the USB and Firewire mixers vs direct digital interface. (remember, he's trying to sell you something.)
In my experience, I have used the Multimix 8 and it did OK. It still needed a little headroom in the preamp dept.
An example of a simple yet effective set-up would be running your mic of choice into a preamp like the Rane MS1b and then into the direct line input (not preamp) of a simple interface. Some folks find an interface with good preamps, like the Edirol UA-25 and save some bucks. The podcast attached will explain the higer audio resolutions available from different interface choices.
Minus your mic, the cost of a little higher quality can be under or right at $300.

I use an Audio Technica AT3035 along with a first gen Mbox (Make sure you don't get the Mbox 2 as it sacrificed the Focusrite Preamps for MIDI). Mbox comes with ProTools LE which is always handy to know. I use Adobe Audition (CooEdit pro) for some stuff as well as Audacity, though I don't like the UI so much. _________________ Jeff

Are you using the MBox into Cool Edit? No Problems? |
No, I haven't been able to figure out how to get them to talk to each other. I use the Mbox into Protools and then do some other things such as Noise reduction in CoolEdit after bouncing to disk from ProTools. _________________ Jeff

While we are talking equipment, is anyone else using a Red Rover interface with their software? ADStech Red Rover. It works great with Adobe Audition and Cool Edit Pro and allows you to have remote control over your session in case you don't have your PC right with you in your sound booth. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Is that the Mbox mini 2 your refering to ? I did purchase the Rode NT1A for a MIC. I am very happy with the results so far...at least in the store anyway..
I have heard great things from numerous people about the MBOX mini.
What do you guys think there??

Hi all,
Another sorta newb here also getting ready to set up a small booth at my office to hopefully reduce the number of times I have to hop in the car for auditions.
Chris, you mentioned checking the Digidesign website for info on compatibility, etc. Is there a specific link on their site that you can recommend reviewing?
Also, anybody else have any info on resources to check for compatibility? I'd also been considering the Firebox / Firepod because I'd read some good things about them, but obviously I want to make sure that they're going to work ok with my laptop or, I guess more importantly, make sure they're not gonna not work with it
Thanks!

I'm using a card from ESI called the Juli@ (pron: julia) It's been rated very well and tested against some of the lynx ( an expensive interface system said to be one of the better if not best) cards and done exceptionally well. It's around 129.00 on ebay right now. It has a nice, albeit sublte mid range presence. It's a 24 bit 192khz capable card that has a unique ability to switch from RCA connetors to 1/4" connectors by pulling the board apart turning it around and reattaching it. It also has some pretty darn good specs. Check it out.

I think that about covers me. |

What about Leafy Sea Dragon attacks? You didn't mention those and I don't think they're covered under 'natural disasters' unlike, apparently, nuclear explosions _________________ Lou Zucaro

Right now I have my Mic to Firebox to PC set-up which is working fine!
Right after I get back from VOICE I'll be re-arranging....updating demos....updating/creating websites.....yep...busy....busy...busy!!!
7 days to Vegas, baby!!!!
