I am dropping this in the mail for a former junior hockey player from this area that I did some work for, but who is now in the big city of Vancouver. Thanks for the opener Dave C:
The account is overdue and I need to get this invoice off of my books. Payment was received in a very timely fashion the last time we worked together (May ’06) and I really don’t think you would like to have some of my Sabre colleagues (Andrew Peters, Brad May) drop by when they are in Vancouver to collect

A bit of tongue in cheek can work if you REALLY know the client well. Also, if they feel they're doing you a favor, then they tend to react well.
I know it's a bitter pill to swallow, but I don't like getting all "lawyerish" on folks. If I have a problem payer, I just forgo doing any more work until we're square (even if it means waiting longer).

Dave, you've gotta admit that sometime you just have to (obviously though, you give some consideration to regular customers). Nobody likes to be the bad guy, but you've got to put money on the table.
