This recent one I got had so many words that I somehow had to cram into 25 seconds that no matter how fast I read I couldn't break 27. I finally had to cheat and use time compression. Now it sounds like I am doing a prescription drug side effect disclaimer.

That's exactly why I never time an audition read. I think it much better to present the best me...and let them figure out the copy is too long. |
I would have done that but the lead specifically said, "must be 25 seconds". I made reference to there be an inordinate amount of copy for the allotted time, but I haven't heard back. I suppose in the future I should try and have a conversation with the ad agency before I submit something I don't feel good about. |

SCAM ALERT - Be very wary of such requests. Make sure you watermark anything that asks for a specific time. |

It was for a large ad agency in L.A. I doubt it would be a scam. But I can understand how that raises a big red flag. |

You must have been tempted - c'mon now, admit it - you musta been tempted to just send the guy a short note that said "Are you a flaming idiot?".
For anyone easily offended by vulgarity, please excuse the use of the "F" word. |

To be honest as I was typing my response it wasn't as nice as it ended up. But I figured that perhaps in the future when they have a reasonable amount of copy they may consider me. |

Unless I'm proposing we violate some law here:
After this job is closed and the client has picked their talent I'd like to see one of you change the name and contact info of the business and post the script.
It's been a while since we've had a VOBB recording session and this might be a fun one to play with. Thoughts? _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Don't be so sure. Stories of auditions being "stolen" by agencies (big and small), for demos to their clients, abound.

Agreed. I've seen it happen, and had it happen to myself. Thankfully, a strongly worded letter from a legal representative took care of it.
I never do an equity audition without placing a "value added feature" to the mix anymore. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

So I woke up this morning with a note in my inbox from this station. They've reconsidered, are happy with my terms (12 month contract, retainer, blah blah blah), and will be faxing over the signed contract this weekend. Guess I get the gig after all. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Brian,
Excellent. There's a valuable lesson here about sticking to our standards, even if it seems like it will cost us in the short run. _________________ Be well,

Amen to that Bob! Let's hope that approach starts panning out soon.
Congrats on the gig. Brian. |
