I was contacted the other day by a friend. Seems a radio station he's doing some work for wants a new station voice. They like my stuff and want to know what I can do. Great!
So I send them a proposal for a 12 month contract, X amount of pages a month etc etc. They email back, "Our last guy did unlimited for $200 a month, Also, we want you to do all of our production. Can you match that?" Ummm. No.
Just another day in the life. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

You missed the point. The last guy did it for $200 per month and if he could have afforded to pay $250 per month the station would've let him clean the s Chevvy Nova. |

From what I heard from some people in the business imaging isn't a good money maker unless you have a ton of clients or perhaps some big channels with deep pockets. |

Well, yeah, but it's (probably) fun and a bit different than the usual fare (oh, and by 'fare' I don't mean money).
Methinks this is the toughest part about the business, coming close to getting the gig and then getting dropkicked. Arrrgh. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

What's worse is when you get a private lead and due to bad copy you can't get a good read. This recent one I got had so many words that I somehow had to cram into 25 seconds that no matter how fast I read I couldn't break 27. I finally had to cheat and use time compression. Now it sounds like I am doing a prescription drug side effect disclaimer.

It's a tough nut to crack. Everybody wants THE names or wants you for cheap. But it's my favorite part of what I do so I keep plugging along and relishing every small success. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Brian, I know it sucks to not get a gig when you think it’s yours.
Back in June of last year I had done a spot for an NBC affiliate station in Arkansas. The station commercial producer had found me on v123. Well, he loved my work and promised me more gigs from him. Shortly thereafter he quit working there and went to a better job. Haven't heard from him since. Until a few weeks ago! He called me out of the blue and wanted to hook me up with a series of 16 :30 national spots for the Weather channel. He said ultimately his client would have to decide whether to use me or not, but he was highly recommending me and was going to get back with me. It wasn’t a guaranteed thing, but he said If the client went with me, it would be a guarantee of continuing work from them. I was sent a script with very vague direction to submit as a custom demo. Well…I ended up not getting the gig. It turned out I was on a shortlist with 4 other guys. The Weather Channel producer really loved my voice but in the end, they went with a different guy because his voice was slightly higher pitched and sounded older...more neighborly/gardeny sounding. (The gig was for the gardening segment of the Weather Channel). So that's that. I didn't get it. However, the guy that put me on the shortlist, did say they all thought I sounded great and that I impressed the hell out of the whole team (his words not mine). He is going to include me for all future gig opportunities that come through him (which he says will be abundant), and when his agency needs VO work done for themselves....they are going to use me. But Brian it was a hard pill to swallow…being that close to a gig like that and then not getting it. _________________ TG2

I feel you man, I listened to your demo on the savvy site. Nice work! Even though you didn't get that particular job I feel certain the experience will lead to great things for you soon. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Thanks man! That means alot to me. I appreciate the encouragement. I didn't mean for my post to be a thread jack....I meant it as encouragement, but you ended up encouraging me......sorry...and thanks. _________________ TG2

Brian,
First allow me to chime in and give you the VO pat on the back. Sorry you didn't get the gig. You gave them what you felt was a fair price for what you are worth and didn't see it your way. Their loss.
I just had a couple slip through my fingers. One off of my generic demo that they liked, just wanted a custom read. I shot it right back to them and then.
poof
Nothing. Not even a "thanks but no thanks". Silence. This was for a narration spot that was absolutely PERFECT for me since it was for a presentation dealing with some computer software and the audience was school faculty. Well, I work in IT support on a University campus! Hello! I do these kind of presentations LIVE all the time! I couldn't have sounded more at ease with the copy.
Another was from a private lead and they "said" it was between me and one other guy. I can't even win when the odds are 50-50! _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Thanks guys, no worries. I don't feel bad about this one at all. Basically what they want is an outsourced production director for $200 a month. That's why I turned it down, I just needed to vent a little. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

That's exactly why I never time an audition read. I think it much better to present the best me...and let them figure out the copy is too long. _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |
