I peruse Craiglist from time to time seeing if there are any desperate souls who need VO like I need gigs. I come across one today who wants a resume, demos and a cover letter.
It seems all of this documentation is silly and that if your voice fits, then your voice fits. Previous projects you've worked on makes sense, but a cover letter?? Gimme a break.
Am I being unreasonable? _________________ Jeff

Jeffery,
What this person is looking for is: a way to get to know the person who is sending the demo. Cover letters are used in the "old school' ways of doing things to determine a persons competency, what their skills are, and find whether or not they are competent. Cover letters also are used to see if a person is capable of following directions.
The question you should be asking is: "Am I willing to go to this much detail for one job"? If you are, then follow the directions, if not, don't bother replying to the offer.
I used to read 'cover letters' to see if a person could spell correctly, if they knew punctuation, and phrasing. If they did not, I did not wish to hire them.
Make your choices.
Toodles

I was one of the people who reviewed resumes and cover letters at the studio where I worked for many years. It was a quick way to eliminate (sadly) a high percentage of applicants, who may well have been otherwise qualified for a position there. It actually became a little depressing seeing how job seekers chose to present themselves. |

I understand the point of a cover letter in trying to land an actual job there. but it seems superfluous to ask a potential VO to submit a cover letter for a 30 second spot.
But like Frank says, if I don't want to do it, then I won't. I'm just wondering if others have had to submit all 3 forms of documentation when trying land single VO gigs. _________________ Jeff

Presenting ones voice may be easy to do... but how you present yourself on paper, is a whole different story. _________________ "Bailey"

Thinking about it, I think the real source of my annoyance is the source of the lead: Craigslist.
If this was a reputable talent agency, or an established production house then I wouldn't complain a bit. But this is some unknown on Craigslist which is a cesspool of unpaid student gigs. Just seems a little presumptious on their part.
Ah well, time to move on.... _________________ Jeff

Don't be so quick as to discount Craigslist as a bogus source for leads.
I've gleaned several very good clients based on posts on the list. And I personally know a few others who have as well.
Like everything...you have to have the instincts to know a scam artist when you encounter one. And yes, there are quite a few who post on that list.
But hey, they play V123, and I've done quite well there, too. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

Let the cover letter fit the job! This is the cover letter I used to land the job that got me to where I am right now. I was going for a specific job... so I sent a DIFFERENT kind of cover letter.
