ok, this may be a dumb question, but how do people with mixers get the sound into the computer? Do you go through the inputs of a pro-quality soundcard?

I ask because, like Kara, I have an Mbox and I love the USB interface. Stays 100% digital and I don't need a swanky soundcard.

It depends on the mixer, but some have USB/Firewire connectors and depending can actually work seamlessly in a host application like Pro Tools. Otherwise I would assume that people would go SP/DIF out from their mixer into the digital input on their soundcard. I know my Mac Pro has one.

some are USB, some are FW, some use SP/DIF, others can use TRS, and some with DB-25.

It all depends on your layout, options, and available architecture.

I've taken the tape output of my Mackie and put it into the 1/4" jacks in the back of the Mbox—this bypasses the preamps in the Mbox, which I don't particularly care for.

mic—Symetrix 528—Mackie—Mbox—Mac.

What is the Symetrix for? Doesn't the Mackie have preamps?

I used to use as combination of the Symetrix and Mackie, but the Mackie has developed noise in its pre-amped channels, so I just use a straight channel.

The pre in the Symetrix is very quiet and I like how it handles both of my mics. I also like the tiny adjustments I can make to gate or crank my sound.
