For the first time, I recorded a demo of a character piece and my wife didn't believe it was me doing the voice.
Fooling her, that's progress! _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Awesome! I recently had that same fun experience! I sent my parents an MP3 of a PSA I did with my best 'teen' mall rat voice, and my own parents didn't know it was me!

When I was first cutting demo reels, I had my brother listen. He didn't understand what it was. Thought it was me editing together a bunch of clips I found on the web. Why I would be doing that, I don't know. But he's kind of dumb about this stuff so maybe his opinion doesn't matter.
But yeah, it's a compliment. _________________ Jeff

Actually, asking your brother can be a very dandy way of finding out the effectiveness of your labors.

I had a similar experience when I pointed my friend to my website to listen to my demos. We were chatting via instant messenger and he asked me why I put up real commercials rather than my demos. I guess my demos don't sound a lot like my normal speaking voice. |

Yeah! I've had 2 such victories in my life. One where she didn't believe it was me and it was and a second where she thought it was me and it wasn't. When a person has known you for over 20 years... that IS a breakthrough!
Congrats! _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

My mother played a spot for me today and insisted it was me. I had never heard the spot before. I had never heard of the establishment before.
I would know if I had a regional for a chain of family restaurants running in her market. I'm just sure I'd know that.
But darn it, it sounded so much like me, I even started to wonder if it was me after a few seconds!
I have to find that girl...
And rough her up a little...

Amy-- I was in a Sears store several years ago, looking for a cordless phone, so I was scrunched down with the gear, deep in thought, comparing specs —when I suddenly became aware of something else. Sears plays ads for itself within its house music (or it did then, at any rate) and I heard myself on the P.A.
I stood up, my mind racing. When did I audition this? It must've been an audition because I KNOW I didn't get paid for a Sears ad. Had an audition been stolen?
This person had my timbre, my inflection, my odd word spacing, nearly everything.
It weren't me, though. I haven't heard her since. I wonder who she is. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I got a nice email the other day from a fellow VO with a nice complement
about a Sony TV commercial of mine she just saw.
Not me.
So who are these shady dopplegangers that steal away the dream clients? We all seem to have them.
Aliens. It's got to be.
Maiku - perhaps. _________________ www.michaelrhys.com

I once sat in a voice over session with another male voice over and he was waxing lyrical about being the voice that launched a particular model of car.
He must've been very puzzled as to the reason why no one in the control room seemed impressed in the least, in fact quite the opposite they were keen to get on with the job in hand. I made no comment and gave our engineer something for level.
Job done we went into mission control.
"Philip, thank you, REALLY, thank you!" said Becky, everyone else nodded in agreement. Was my performance that good? No, they were just grateful for my convenient attack of amnesia regarding my resume. |

Yes! That's exactly the experience I had! Weird feeling, isn't it? Glad to hear you aren't plagued by continually hearing her doing gigs you're not getting paid for. I hope I have the same luck with my voice doppelganger.
