Ok so here's a link to a slideshow tour of my voice booth. This will get a permanent home on my website soon enough.

P.S. Sorry for the link offsite DB but it seems more practical than increasing page load times in this thread.

Enjoy!

Aww man! You owe me for a new keyboard. I ruined this one with approximately 2 pints of drool.

Dave,

Very, very nice. So, do you find that you're getting sufficient sound isolation with the Silver model?

Can I ask, Balky, what you had your gate settings at to minimize the amount of computer fan/processor noise in your recordings? I, too, am using the "Harlan Hogan Special" acoustic-foam-lined plywood box on a large desk, and my computer is about 5 feet away and rather noisy. I hate to say it but I'm rather low-knowledge about the EQ, gates, processing, effects, etc. needed for digital recording. I wouldn't even know where to start with setting the gate for noise! As I understand it, isn't "gate" just controlling the mic response (in milliseconds) to the decibel level that feeds into the mic in order for it to recognize and record the sound? And if I am understanding it correctly, would adjusting the gate actually make any difference to the background noise that the CPU fan is making while voice is being recorded?

Thanks!!!

Jennifer,

You are correct. The gate would only cut out background noise while you are NOT speaking on mike. The noise would still be there while you are actually voicing.

You can gate out a train station if you try hard enough, but once you open your mouth, the trains would be right there with you. Tread lightly the noise gate.

Dave,

Back about 15 years ago I worked at a recording studio that was:

A. In the attic of this guy's house, and...
B. In the flight path of the local airport.

His solution? A noise gate! (It took 3 times as long as it should have to do that 20 minute script because we kept having to stop when a plane went over head while I was reading and because he had the gate cranked so high that about half the time my voice didn't open the gate until half-way through the first syllable of a sentence.)

Gating is probably not what you want. But Limiting might have the answer for you. We had quite a lengthy discussion on it at http://www.vo-bb.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2755

Thanks for all the responses--I'm really glad to see I wasn't off on my understanding of a gate. I'll go check out the discussion on limiting--thanks for the link. Always something more to learn, eh? Smile

bluemoon -

A noise gate is gonna be a waste of time for most noises - as has been mentioned - if the extraneous noise is not too severe, a decent denoiser may be able to clean it up.

Your editing software probably has a noise filter included in it. It may be called by some other name, so look for something that sounds like it could be a noise filter.
