Todd, Bill...
have you two noticed more usage of the Ribbon mics over the past 1-3 years in VO?
I was reading something as of late where it seems that there is a trend moving back towards using these mics for the very reasons that you guys use them.
Personally, I don't think my voice comes through quite as nicely on the ribbon as on some of my other mics, so I tend to stay away from it more often than not for VO (different strokes, different folks kinda thing...). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I have been hearing more about ribbons lately - a resurgence of sorts, I guess. AEA has some nice reasonably prices mics - so does Royer. I don't use mine every day - but I like to use it every now and then. I explained it like this once: I think it's the difference in having a new corvette that you drive to work everyday and having a '69 Stingray you only drive when the sun is shining. You do have to be gentle with them - they tend to be more fragile - kinda like me. AND - I've always said - mic choice is a very personal thing - it's all about what makes you sound the best. I have a lot of different mics - but I have a disease. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I have your disease as well...
I refer to it as GAS (Gear Acqusition Syndrome)
Granted, it's definitely they're not the type of mic that can stand much (if any) abuse, but on the right voice they sound rather nice.
Of them all though, I have preferred the RCA 77-DX (due to the pattern of pickup, which works so well for voice, spoken or otherwise), and the Royer 122-V (which has to be heard to be believed).
While I am still leaning towards the Horch for my next major mic purchase (within the next quarter), I have a lot of nice items to choose from, and the fact that I already own some of the items I am looking at (CMV-563, U67, U47, C12) isn't a factor (because this time, the recording room is for me and I'm not letting it out like I did with the others, lol). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Yes. Kevin G commented about this very trend to me in a PM some two years ago. I love the way they sound, but they're not right for everything.
Laugh if you must, but I've heard good things about Shiny Box. The 23 has been discontinued but the 46 looks nice. I don't own one and never tried one. I caught some chatter about them on a message board. |

Do you know the Swedish name of your desk? I can't seem to find it in the Ikea catalog online. |
Here is the link to the one I bought from Wood Technologies - a ConSet single column electric desk base - they don't sell the tops because they assume you will customize them for your own space. It was under $500. I have a black one - refer to the pics on page three of this thread.

FWIW, K&K Audio also makes some kick-ass gear for studio furniture.
A good example of durability would be that you can literally stand on the top of the desks and racks. No Walmart construction here... although for the upper end vendors (Omnirax, K&K, Anthro, etc.) be prepped for 2-3K.

Furniture?? I am lucky to have a little space. I must say I have room envy . With five kids and 6 bedrooms there isn't much space left over not to mention finding somewhere quiet. I finally accepted the fact that small space is the only answer so I hired a contractor and the project began...and fairly close to completed but as a fellow gear junky...not sure if it is ever quite complete. We converted a large walk in closet and built a isolation booth that works quite well but can't quite block my 11 year olds saxophone practice. The studio is behind the bar so if a session goes sour...I can always drink myself into a stupor. Here are a few pics:

Nice setup and use of space Jeff! I'd post pictures of my walk-in-closet studio but I'd be laughed off the board. |

JeffK, Nice! I agree with VoiceTom. Nice use of space and I bet it sounds great.
VoiceTom, I would hope you'd feel comfortable about posting your setup. I'd like to think that this board isn't about "making fun" of people. Although the original post was about furniture, we can learn from each other's creativity. We're all in different places and situations. Who knows? Maybe something you're doing will light the spark in someone else? |
