I posted this on the 'Voiceover Pros' group on Facebook but wanted to see what everyone here thought about Descript.
For the unintiated, Descript will analyze audio (or video) of someone and allow you to ADD IN their voice. It's pretty accurate, pretty cool and pretty scary for VO talent.
I came across an audition of theirs through voice123.com this morning (see image) and it made me get worried.
For $1500 in perpetuity, your voice is theirs.

Now, you noticed in their video they used professional actors to play the inexperienced amateur corporate video creators. If it works as advertised that’s a really slick piece of video editing software, but there’s no way it will make inexperienced narrators sound as good as a pro.
Yes, some people are satisfied with weak VO (I hear it all the time in YouTube videos) but companies that care pay for quality.

Yo Bruce,
I agree with you. However, that's contingent on them only getting 'amateur' VOs to audition for and land their 'stock voice' positions.
Is this something pros won't want to be a part of?
I'm hoping not. I don't think so.
I don't know. Maybe I'm just a little too worried about it.

As with any "how-to" video, having the product demonstrated by people who actually know how-to, makes it easier to sell because it creates the impression that it's so easy, anyone can do it, when, in fact, the demonstrators make it look easy. I'm sure the editing by circling and deleting text is probably as easy as in the video. However, being able to read the copy or speak the lines in a way that makes the two segments sound like they flow together (or even know that it makes a difference) is something a professional likely can do and amateurs likely cannot. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

So I tried it out. Not impressed.
As mentioned by Lee " Quote: | ...being able to read the copy or speak the lines in a way that makes the two segments sound like they flow together (or even know that it makes a difference) is something a professional likely can do and amateurs likely cannot." |
I had a non-VO friend try it, the results were less than desirable. Myself, it worked, sort of.
I edit and create with some of the best... I am not the best but, I do O.K. Knowing how to work a system would be beneficial, but this "a" is not as simple as it looks.
Personally, I will pass....
Your results may vary.
