Since giving up cable TV and using Hulu on my workstation, what used to be my TV flat screen monitor sits 25 feet away in the living room doing nothing. What specific devices would I need to use it to stream content? And I'm guessing it would use the Wifi from my workstation computer? I'm totally in the dark about this stuff.

Thanks.

Hi Mike. Lots of good options out there. Roku, Amazon firestick, nvidia shield. I've used all of those. Even the cheapo mi box works pretty well, assuming you have the bandwidth.

I live in the Apple ecosystem, so it's Apple TVs for me... but there are plenty of cheaper alternatives. I think Todd hit the main ones.

Here's the important thing as far as I'm concerned... I have access to a large local library of digitized media (all my old DVDs etc.) I use a program on my Mac to access them, and it's remote component on my iPhone to view them (Air Video Server & Air Play). I can then "throw" the phone video to the Apple TV, so it's on the big screen. Basically, whichever device you use, make sure you can throw it media from your new phone. I assume most modern devices allow this and have the program available for iPhone... but it may be worth checking.

If all you want to do is stream content from your computer to the TV screen, a Chromecast will do. I also had a Roku and that worked fine. It was attached to a smart TV, but should work equally well on a not so smart TV. I replaced the Roku with a Firestick, but only because there was one app I needed that only the Firestick supports. In some ways, I slightly prefer the Roku, but that could just be because I was used to its interface when I switched the Firestick. One additional bonus with the Firestick is, it has Alexa built in. You have to push a button the remote to use it, so it's not like a regular Alexa that's listening all the time. I never thought I wanted Alexa, but I realized I could get it to turn my display cabinet lights on and off, and will be able to buy controllers for my ceiling fans to eliminate using pull chains. One caveat about any of these devices: your TV has to have an HDMI input for any one you want to use.

Up until a week or so ago, I was streaming YouTube with a Samsung BluRay player. Then the (Samsung-specific) global pandemic hit so I bought an Amazon Firestick. It does the job for me, but I only use it to watch YouTube...
