I finally received a copy of the documentary which I narrated a few months ago. The client sent it to me a couple of weeks ago along with a nice thank you note/holiday card. Some folks here had asked to see (hear) a clip if possible. I was about to try to upload a snippet, when I found a link to a clip posted online already. http://www.der.org/films/prison-pups.html The first narration isn't until about 2:15, but you may actually enjoy the full 12 minute clip. It's a great story of how puppies are being trained in prisons as "helpers" for wheelchair ridden and otherwise disabled people in need of assistance.

It's a 12 minute segment of the one hour documentary. I think the film itself came out great, but (as is typical for me) I hear things I wish I had done differently. But the client directed me and she was happy with the end result, so I guess that's all that matters.

BTW, I tried to get my wife to watch the DVD, but she won't because she knows she'll bawl her eyes out. I must admit to getting a little weepy viewing the film myself, so I can't blame her. (It's sad only because we see some of the inmates having to say goodbye to the dogs after training them.)

Great stuff, Don!

It makes me think of my dog Samm who passed away last year. Half the fun was training her from when she was six months old and watching it stick. It gave me a great deal of satisfaction.

Thanks for the kind words, all. The film has received a couple of awards already and is still making the rounds at more screenings around the country. Here's hoping it makes its way to the airwaves!

One particular nice thing happened at the screening I went to. At the end of the film, during the Q & A, down the aisle from the back of the auditorium came Billy and he quickly found Winn, who was also in the audience. And on the way out of the auditorium, I noticed one of the other recently released inmates with his family.

Liz, if those 12 minutes had your eyes welling up, better have a giant box of tissues handy if you ever get a chance to see the full 58 minutes. Smile

Don, you sounded great! Thanks for sharing this with us.

Service dogs are a subject dear to my heart. My own beast was so fortunate to have the opportunity for training from a young man who studied under Bonnie Bergin, the originator of the service dog concept. It is truly amazing work.

My all time favorite service dog story is here:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat/2004-10-29-911-dog_x.htm

What this particular article left out, though, was that the dog went to the front door & unlocked it & was waiting there for paramedics. She had been trained to recognize police & firefighters as "special friends with cookies." Awww. Smile

Nicely done! And to have WGBH on the resumé is no small shakes.

This is wonderful Don! Good work.

"the whole 12 minutes" indeed - when it suddenly stopped at 12 minutes I was like, whahhhhhh! where did my story go?
