|And the name is "fumfer". As an actor I've used it (sparingly) as an audition tool to play more realistic, everyday people.
Definition: Fumfer (or phumfer) comes from the Yiddish. It means to stall or evade a question, remark, etc, by mumbling & fumbling words on purpose.
Example from a frequent fumferer, Jeff Goldblum:
I love this guy. An absolutely original character.
