Matt Dubios just posted a video about beta testing their new rate calculator on the voiceovers.com site. He asked anyone interested to give it a spin for bugs and/or suggestions.

i'll admit up front, i may not understand the concept - but, i ran an eLearning scenario through it & (3,251-5300 words) and it came up with $750.00 for the job. coupla things:

it's a pretty big range - over 2000 words
that's .23˘/word @ 3,251 words & that's ok - but only around .14˘/word @ 5300 words, which is a pretty steep drop.

My best guess is, Todd, they are billing by the hour not by the word for performance only. Maybe they should add the options to bill by the word and also for studio time if editing is needed.

/just dropped them a note.

They're calculating corporate video at 160 wpm.

It's more like 145 down to 140 - 138 if you're counting for graphics.

A lot of people are going to find out their scripts are 1-2 minutes too long.

I've always quoted 150 wpm regardless of the content, so IMO, at least for me, they're not far off.

So I tested this with a project that was recently proposed to me but I couldn’t duplicate the project because it was to run on Sirius. In the radio category they only have ‘Local, Regional, National, Canada, US & Canada and Worldwide’. Plus my project had a considerable number of tags, way more than the five max on the drop down menu.

Sirius, while it may be national, is by subscription, so the audience is limited and not national on the same scale as ‘National’.

Thoughts on this?

Rick, I just listened to your awesome narration demos. You *could* be quoting 140 wpm - if you wanted to. Smile

Your fastest one is the Chevrolet piece which is about 150. The others are closer to 140-3.

Considering how lucrative tags can be, this is a serious oversight; that said, I think most jobs involving tags would be handled by agents or managers.

I've been the voice of this campaign for a long time. But this last time they wanted quadruple the amount of tags, for the same rate as the prior 'five tag' rate. Which is why, when I quoted them the new, 'fair' rate, they said they would get someone 'internal' to do it.

Lost the gig but I wasn't going to give away the farm to keep it.
