Dear wonderful people,

I was looking at Izotope products on sweetwater and am stuffering from decision fatigue. There's like a hundred products on here...

I really will just be using the de-clicker, is that gonna cost me $300? any chance one of you lovely people could link me to the most cost-effective way to be at the cutting edge of de-clicking technology?

I emailed the company on friday and they still haven't gotten back to me...

I think that's a good approach - since you aren't familiar with the product it does no harm to just go with only what you need - you can always upgrade later if you decide you need it.

Good decision. Elements is a good package. While it doesn't have the much-praised "mouth de-click", the de-click it does have gets very close. It served me well for ages. Just do a few test runs with it to get it set up for your voice/mic/environment. It's worth spending the time on it.

Its... just crap. It kind of just half-deleted the clicks so they sounded digital. But I guess I can do rx7 proper on trial and that one’s de-clicker is better?

Huh. It works better for some than others, but it shouldn't be crap....

Did you play with adjusting the strength and other options? I've used the RX5 declicker, but on "decrackle" (next tab) and low strength. Two passes at low strength is generally better than one on high strength. The Declick itself tends to leave me with odd sounds on my Ds and Ts at the end of sentences, but the decrackle doesn't.

I've used decrackle on a whole file on low setting, and stronger setting on isolated selections.

Plus if you throw it into spectral view on the stand-alone program, the leftover clicks are often pretty easy to see and remove.

Hope that is somewhat helpful... I haven't had opportunity to play with RX7 yet so all the above is about Rx5 Declick, not the RX6/7 Mouth Declick. Thought I'd better clarify that.

I don't get a lot of clicks when I talk thank goodness. But when I do I use Auto Heal in Audition. So it's not like I have to do the whole file. Just a part or two at a time.

This is one reason I don't like attempting to automate processing on breaths and clicks. Breaths and clicks are almost like fingerprints; rarely are two exactly alike. So, we either spend too much time trying to get the settings just right, or the plugin removes either too much or not enough, causing undos or re-dos.

So, like Eddie, I use Audition's auto-heal. I like it a lot.

Mouth de-Click is excellent but it's not perfect. Too strong and you'll get artefacts on hard consonants that fall at the end of words. Too light and you'll find yourself reaching for the auto heal in Audition. It is a great timesaver though, especially if you do a lot of long form stuff as we do here.

I've mentioned this before but it may bear repeating:

Izotope declickers have a checkbox for "output clicks only". If you run a pass with that enabled and listen back, you should hear only isolated clicks. If you are hearing sounds (warbles, non-click artefacts, whatever) on top of the clicks when listening to the "clicks only" output, your settings are too high and need to be dialed back. Do it often enough and you can get a pretty good idea what a safe default to run on all you recordings would be.
