So what else is new? The latest version of Skype no longer seems to allow a choice of audio inputs so you can't feed your mic audio down the line to callers.
Can I call someone and get an answer or complain? No. This "phone" company doesn't seem to own a phone in their customer service department. They force you to look at a lot of FAQs that have nothing to do with this problem. You can submit questions but you have to do it through a Microsoft Account. I don't have a friggin' Microsoft Account. Don't need it otherwise and don't want it.
So as I get ready to blow Skype out of my computer, what are my reasonable options? Google Voice doesn't have a clear answer on how to make or receive calls.... they've had too many versions with too many sets of previous, now useless, instructions left on the Web.
I guess I could drop $600 and get a full blown ip/DTL account which offers some kind of "listening" system. I've been planning on dropping my ISDN lines and using their ISDN service. I've got a couple of stick-in-the-mud clients who will not try any other service than original ISDN.
Anyway, help please?

I had no idea about that - thanks for the tip. It will let you select your speakers but not the mic. I guess it defaults to your selected preference in your Mac/PC settings. Not great, but you can get around it. _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover

That setting is no longer in Preferences, but should be found through the "mystery navigation" three dots to the right of your name on the main screen. That ought to give you an option for "Audio and Video Settings" which should let you select something other than default mic.
There are certainly numerous annoying aspects of the current version, but so far, they haven't removed something that vital...
+1 for BodalgoCall, Source-Connect Now, Zoom and even google hangouts over skype.

Sorry Jim but the "three dots" on my Skype reveals the same Audio & Video Settings screen that no longer offers Input options.
The Faffcon Friends group has given a handful of recommendations of using Zoom for calls. I shall investigate.

Ha... dammit!
Checked on the studio computer and was running 8.21.0.7 / 2018.18.01.11
and it promptly gave me the message that it was downloading an update. Because it no longer gives the option to not update.
Looking forward to an even more uselessly crippled version of skype in my near future... Oy. _________________ JimEdgarVoices.com | JustAskJimVO.studio | Source-Connect: jimedgarvoices |

"Thank you sir, may I have another!"
Yep. Gonzo.
At least it is still taking input from my booth mic, which is where it was set last time I used it. But, changing audio input via System Preferences has no effect. And the audio sounds pretty crunchy (though their echo test usually does).
Used the Report a Problem option via pref's to report it. Nothing mentioned in their release notes. Off to make sure no one plans to connect via skype for at least the coming week...
Then I'm going to ride my bike. Have a safe weekend, y'all! _________________ JimEdgarVoices.com | JustAskJimVO.studio | Source-Connect: jimedgarvoices |

UPDATE 7/10/18:
It looks like the new update - v 8.25.0.5 has fixed the input selection issue. It also seems to have added an "Audio & Video Settings" menu option under the Skype Menu in Mac OS.
of course, it's still skype....

Another Skype "Feature"*
*because documenting a bug turns it into a feature...
Encountered this with a client on Friday. When the "Speaker" audio of Skype is routed to an interface (Scarlett 2i2 and Audient ID14 for sure), you do not hear the ring tone from an incoming call.
If you switch to "Internal Speaker" or similar, it plays, but for some reason does not route to the interface.
You can either pay attention to your screen, keep the a engaged on your mobile device or tablet (but answer through your computer), or set the Speaker to "internal" while you are waiting, then select your interface once the connection has been made.
Oh skype, you playful little minx! _________________ JimEdgarVoices.com | JustAskJimVO.studio | Source-Connect: jimedgarvoices |
