I know for several reasons, at least, that Caller ID may not display the number of an incoming call. And we also know that Verizon – and perhaps other Telcos – may be growing lax in maintaining the copper network and its features.
But has anyone found incoming calls (in voicemail) that completely get past Caller ID; where it doesn't even "know" that a call came in (much like someone jumping the White House fence)?
Caller ID data is supposedly sent between the first and second rings. I have my voicemail set to answer after five rings. So, that someone is able to leave voicemail yet not show up on Caller ID is a bit of a mystery. _________________ Mike

My phone company offers a feature that allows me to turn off the delivery of my number when making outgoing calls. (This is a useful, somewhat necessary feature for parole workers, mental health workers, maybe ministers, when making calls from home rather than the office to "clients" during off hours.) On my home phone, dialing *77 will stop the delivery of my number. I don't know if that would show up on your Caller ID in some way or not. My own caller ID tends to show that a ring was received but that the calling number is blank.
This has become a topic of interest to me. I am on a one-man war with the telephone sales industry over the Do Not Call List national failure.
(I could write a lengthy essay on what I have learned... and what I have NOT been able to learn... but this probably isn't the proper discussion group to host such a hot potato!!! Private-Message me if you want to exchange some notes.) |

I do not now, nor have I ever, received a call from the White House Fence.
You have to drive all the way to Indy or Cinci for a good fence here (where we have just old picture tube televisions, 8-tracks and other stuff stolen from the dump). _________________ Finally, Ford stops starting to say things and starts. |

Getting a call from The White House Fence is a premium feature available only to the elderly who have a Jitterbug Phone. |

Caller ID has become useless except to tell you that someone you already know is calling you.
For the rest...Caller ID can be faked, spoofed, etc. In fact, rather easily. I've even seen caller ID showing only 3 numbers. Or no numbers at all. Get a fake recorded call from "Bank of America" telling you that your account has been "frozen" and that you need to immediately call "this number?" ONLY..you know that you don't have a "Bank of America" card? YOU CAN BET...that the caller ID is NOT their real number.
We are constantly battling my 95 year old father-in-law who gets calls telling him that he's won 3 million dollars and a car. To collect, all he has to do is send them the $500 dollar processing fee by money order. And they'll even send a courier right over to pick it up from him. (those people are always so helpful)
Caller ID? When it comes to the "bad guys"....it's useless. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

I have even gotten calls that show up on Caller ID saying the caller is me, calling from the number that is ringing. I'm pretty sure that's impossible. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
